i think that you will find that the crank is a 12G82
rods are either 12G123 or 12G126 (same as a 998 anyway)
the blocks on a 998 and 1098 are the same

this may help

no, you need to use the 1098 crank and pistons.

you will also need the 1098/1275 crank damper otherwise the engine will destroy itself!!

the hole for the gudgeon pin is in a different place on the 1098 piston to counteract for the longer stroke of the 1098 crank....................you can not use 998 pistons with a 1098 crank.

Well i have a selection of crank pulleys, some are damper type and one is just a solid pulley. Is that the main difference? I will double check the numbers it may be the poor casting that i read wrong.

The timing cover i have has a bit on it that looks like a crank sensor housing would this be right?

Managed to roughly assemble a full engine now minus the gearbox and clutch partsso il just run through it again and then strip the rest of the donor and build it up again.

i have a pic of the timing chain cover from my engine (its the one by the asda box), yours should look like this, as long as you use the big crank damper (and not the thin one) you will be fine.

Yep it looks like that one! Just look like it has a mount for a crank sensor. Well i think i have 3 of the damper type pulleys. That website is good great reference. The one thing with that type of timing chest is one of the holes cuts across the block so i cant put a bolt in!!! It only holds the cover on so i could counter sink it from the rear, just a bit strange.

Il take my camera to work tomorrow and take pics why i wait for paint to dry.Just want to get one engine assembled then i can start getting parts and getting work done!

Is there anyway of checking the pistons are right other than the fact they wont come over the top of the block? Im in the process of completing the mock build and i will take it to the engine bulder for him to work a little magic on it! Will get pics tomorrow to before it goes, hope to take it monday as i have to drop off a Transit connect engine!

you could compare the distance between the gudgeon pin hole in the piston and the top of the piston, there will be less distance on the 1098 piston than a 998 piston.

Well ive got the gearbox off the donor engine and the whole clutch assy. The pistons dont come over the top of the block face so strong possibilty that they are right! i will get the engine bilder to check. The part numbers on the rods are 12g124 and 12g127 so i will have to check on the somerford site to see what they are. I cant find a part number to match what crank pulley i have so will keep searching.

I will try and get some pics up later on when i can find a lead to suit my phone. At least the block number checks out to be a 1098 so a good chance the rest is! Found out the other day my engine builder used to build a lot of grass track engines and he knows a fair bit on how to get them to go.

yeah, you can use the 998 flywheel and the rods are 1098 ones, they always had 2 different part numbers on the same engine...everything is correct.....:-)

Great stuff and i now know that the crank is right so time to let the engine man work his magic and build me a nice engine! He owes us a bit for bringing him a nice bit of work in and now im taking him a transit engine to so he will be over the moon.

Crank should see some balancing
Cam, still looking trying to make my cash stretch as far as poss, Minisport do a cam that runs 1000-6000 powerband so may ask them for advice.
New followers
New shells, rings and seals
New oil pump
New push rods
Duplex vernier timing gear
And new everything i can buy

Next question is one of the bolts for the timing gear housing hits the block and has nowhere to screw into, anyone had this problem? think its mid way up at the front of the engine!
