I live up north, things are usually abit more reasonable up here, but further down south, yeah i could expect those prices.

Im sorry but surely the DVLA cannot just update the register keeper of the car without your consent.

Tell you what there is a nice Audi RS4 down the road that I like the look of, I'll just apply to become the new registered keep of that by filling out the form. i'm not sure it quite works that way?

I would tell the DVLA that you do not agree to the registered keeper update and that as the car has been reported as stolen they should freeze the registered owner until the outcome of a court case or similar?

Hello mate. PM Neil or E.L.M.O. on here.

He had a similiar experience a few years back with his Mini "The Codfather".

I believe there is a thread on here somewhere, but I'm crap at getting the search thing to find anything on here!

As we know registered keeper & owner are 2 different things, I can understand the dvla not being too fussed as someone has offered to make themselves liable for road tax etc for the car. It does still sound a bit off if you are implying the car has been illegally obtained to them, you'd expect public employees in their line of business to show more of an interest. You could probably force their hand with a court order. I persuaded the Council Housing Dept to serve a summons to an ex tenant who'd moved once. I suspect the dvla might be more officious, but there is a procedure for serving a summons via a 3rd party address, such as an employer - you have to make an application to a judge, so it costs an extra £60 or so.

It could still be the same scumbags with the Mini, it's more likely to be a "Carl 'n Wayne" in an old transit acting as sole traders than a pucka limited company, and anything other than a private owner is likely to seem fishy for an old Mini offered for sale.

Think I'd best apologise to any actual Carls & Waynes on TMF now :shy:

Yeah I can understand the DVLA stance. If they got involved in every dispute they wouldn't have time left for anything else. Unfortunately, I am still the registered keeper at the moment and can't get in touch with the new person until it is too late. It should however give me the chance to try and get my white wheels back if nothing else.

The whole thing has really angered me. My friend didn't tell me about needing a badge to park there, but that should not give the bastards the right to just take the car overnight with no warning or anything. It is for this reason that I am going to follow it up and see what comes of it. I will get legal advice in a couple of days when I get back to Afghan, and see where I stand then.

As for the name of the company, I will need to dig around a bit to find out what it was as I can't remember.

Would it be worth contacting your local press and seeing if they will run a story?

Maybe it will shame the people that took your car into giving it back - especially as I'm getting the impression that you are 'serving your country' so there's a human interest aspect to it?

While on the surface that is a good idea, I really don't want my name and details plastered all over the press.

I remember checking the company name out before, and there are plenty of reports of this company being a bunch of scum bags and I am pretty sure they were not the kind of people who suffered shame. They sounded like a typical bunch of sods to me. The most annoying thing was, they 'offered' me a cheap deal to get it back. I then managed to raise the cash, phoned them back the next morning and the guy told me it was only valid the day before. I was raging and it was at that point I told him to do one.

In hindsight, I really should have followed this up sooner.

Not a clue. I remember the company that took it doesn't have an address anywhere on the internet and they obviously wouldn't tell me the location, for fear I would go round there and break their legs :P

I think the best thing I can do at the moment is legal advice, and then if I can't get the car back, I will get in touch with the owner and at least try and get the two white wheels back.

The really annoying thing though was the engine hoist. I had the two legs in there for storage and they were taken as well. The hoist itself was at my go's house, and she moved and she couldn't take it with her. So I ended up losing that as well as she couldn't even sell it with no legs :( The whole experience has been a curse from start to finish to be honest, which is really annoying. I just want the wheels back more than anything.
