Apart from the obvious fact that they lack the electronic anti theft measures of modern vehicles making the easier to take, why do so many real Minis get stolen? I'm wondering if this will filter down to insurance costs before too long.

More thank likely as they do like a good bump up :(

We are seeing it with motor homes at the moment. Due to a rise in thefts insurance companies are stipulating cat 1 alarms and trackers as a necessity

I thought of another simple and free way to cause them problems. Disconnect the battery when you park up. Obviously you will have to keep the security system hoked up though... I would take it as a challenge to never get my mini stolen. It's vandals that worry me!!   My last mini was parked int the private car park under my flat. I went out in the evening and came home to find a bunch off total C**TS smashed my whole mini to bits. They broke all the windows and dented every panel and the roof :( :( :( The worst thing is that no one can do anything to stop vandals. Thieves on the other hand...

That is terrible. The Police could stop a majority of vandalism if they tried, but my experience (living next to a park with a clear view of the kiddies park they regularly trash) is that they don't care. If you are lucky someone rolls up a few hours later but more often than not its a stupid phone call the day after. The guy opposite has suffered for years with his fence being damaged and they don't give a damn it seems. I saw an attempted car break in a few weeks back. I phoned the police and for once they were there within the hour, I told them the scumbags had only left a couple of minutes ago and pointed which way but they stood around chatting! I used to go out to the yobs myself and sorted most problems, but after following one gang who had terrorised an elderly neighbour I was told by the police I was lucky I wasn't being prosecuted for harassment - I had followed them and shouted that I had phoned the police. Utter madness.

Has the car park got anpr cameras?

if thats meant for me then no, it wouldnt have mattered if it did as the getaway car was on false plates.

spoken to the police again today,

im the 13th person this year to have reported a theft of a mini in/around the birmingham area.
from what i can gather they werent taking me very seriously until i told them about so many others, the PC in charge of my case now thinks there is cause for concern (i think the police have been watching reruns of sherlock).

still waiting on the forensics, and the mini is now getting sorted before being hidden away while i organize a new vehicle.

Proof that 'intelligence led policing' is an oxymoron.

Tamworthy - that's a pretty bad situation. The police are just interested in sorting serious crime and easy crime, but can't be bothered to actually deal with persistant scum! I've gone out and warned off gangs of chavs before. I took small bat with me for the scare factor, because if there's more than about 4 of them they will be likely to start on me. I always hope I don't need to use it though because I know I will be the one who gets done! It's crazy how criminals are protected. As far as I know, a burglar can claim against you for damages if they injure them selves in your house.
