Hello you lovely lot...

not sure where to put this.

Edit: This is a 1980 Austin mini 1000

Made some great progress with the mini so far! It's been just over a year since I took on the project, removing engine + cleaning up, welding, sanding, shouting, swearing and bleeding all being part of a thoroughly enjoyable project.

After returning the engine to it's rightful location, connecting the loom and gradually working through a new head gasket, fuel pump, solenoid, electronic distributor, ignition coil, earth strap and the usual "odd item" in between, she's finally near to completion, HOWEVER....

She breathed life almost a week ago, running was lumpy but it ran of its own accord(all be it jump started) for a steady 15 minutes on 3 occasions. The last week things have gone downhill, first the starter motor started disengaging too early, now the solenoid isn't clicking. I've searched the forums extensively, but I feel this is where my level of expertise ends and my reluctant plea for help begins:

If anybody in the South Wales area(Caerphilly) would be available for fault diagnosis/a bit of help one sunny day, with food, beer and tea on tap(and a few quid in your pocket) I would be forever grateful.

As you can see I've made a number of changes, trawled these forums and just seem to be chasing my tail at this stage!

PMs welcome, I may even fire the barbecue up if it's a nice day.

Many thanks,

Chris.

Inertia, but I've mounted solenoid straight to the wok, with a hefty earth strap to the wing from the engine .

Sure you haven't lost a connection now?

If it's not working at all it might not be getting any power to it

You got a multimeter?

Would be appreciated! Going to try some tests with the multimeter this weekend, if no luck, the next weekend perhaps?

Coopdog - Yup! not sure where to start....

Yeah no probs, im no expert by any means but 25 years of mini ownership teaches you a thing or two to say the least. Having a multimeter readily at hand is one of those things!

Buy a new solenoid. That's my best guess, only a few quid and will probably sort it. If it doesn't at least that part is ruled out
I have a feeling it may be the problem from what you say. Fitting a secondary earth strap is always worth doing as well and is
cheap enough to replace and can sort a lot of electrical gremlins.

Followed the Haynes electrical testing section and deducted it to be the solenoid, this one is only three weeks old! I had ruled it out.
Will fit a new one Tuesday and try again.
Thanks for the advice

Apparently the solenoids that are available new now are a load of rubbish, have heard a lot of cases of this happening recently, think there have been a few posts on here regarding it.

Ok bit of an update.

Solenoid has been replaced and the engine turns on the key. I adjusted the timing by a few degrees(as suggested after installing electronic distribution) and it splutters and almost starts!

BUT......The starter motor sounds as if it disengages a little too early, followed by a whirring noise which I assume is the disengaged starter motor slowing down (?)

I've checked the starter motor teeth and they seem OK, Could this still be the problem? it is old.

Chris
