It genuinely looked nice and was listed as rebuilt to 72 spec... also with "Cooper S gearbox".

But It had a rod change box, A+ engine, MPI door bars, tower bolt front subby, side repeaters, fog light...The only thing 72 spec on the car was the VIN plate.

When I started to ask what was involved with making it 72 spec he saw his arse and went off on one asking why I was picking faults with it.

the mini you're on about is the one i posted up on here (it isn't mine, listed for someone in my club) its a very clean and tidy car but it has got its problems like all minis, i have told him that if he's gonna sell it he needs to be completely honest with people as to what it is.

It's just an example and I didn't mean to cause offense by it.  I originally started asking questions about it on Facebook because I quite fancied it and it's kind of a close spec to what my 71 is going to be (well, mine will actually genuinely have decent period parts on it and won't have a knocking bottom end).

As I said, maybe I'm completely out of touch with the cost of these things?

It's getting ridiculous indeed!! Myself and my mate have both been around Minis for years now and we were trying to buy a shell of a guy, I went to school with...he came across two Minis, an '82 saloon auto and an '87 white Mayfair both still on their respective UK plates so VRT would've had to have been paid to register em here. I know what he paid for the cars, which bare in mind was not a lot in the grand scheme of these crazy pricing days...and the blue saloon we were interested in was in its current form engine-less, he still maintained that even given this it would still be worth 1200 quid...I dunno, are even engineless 80's shells worth mad money now!?

Flipping this on its head before I lose my mind???

What would my 71 mk3 be worth after its nut and bolt resto these days?

It's got about 50k on the clock. 1330cc with stage 4 head, centre main strap, balanced bottom end, lightweight flywheel, twin 1.5 SU carbs (totally refurbished), 286 SP cam, vernier...All engine parts new or totally refurbished. Freshly built SCCR box, SC drops, X-pin diff, Hardy Spicer outputs, new Monte drive shafts, new dizzy, Mini sport 4 pots, 10 x 6 GB alloys, suspension all rebuilt with new components, Newton carpet set, Microcell front seats, 1275GT rear seat....bodywork is undergoing a complete restoration with Heritage panels and It'll be professionally painted in gleaming black soon. It's literally having a nut and bolt rebuild and it's full of new parts.

I'd assumed it'd be a 4k car when finished!

I think £4k value of your Mk3 is an under estimate when finished and especially for any agreed value insurance policy you may take out.

Many classified ads don't achieve the prices posted but with ebay like all auctions it only takes 2 people who desperately need the item to get carried away and bid over the odds....or as sometimes happens an overseas buyer pays much more just because so many other UK sellers won't post their items abroad. Remember parts that are common for us to pickup cheaply at the next Mini show and autojumble here in UK, may be rare and hard to find in somewhere like Japan or Malaysia.

Other sellers see the high price achieved and are inspired to dig out their similar items from the shed/garage and suddenly because the 'desperate' buyer has now been satisfied, the remaining buyers realise the item is more common (and therefore cheaper) than they originally thought !

I've been keeping an eye out on classic clubmans on eBay. I know eBay is not the best place look but you do see some bargains pop up one and again. (I'm still kicking myself for not bidding on an mpi engine block that was listed for 99p and no one bid on it...photos of it looked mint. It was relisted and sold for £150)

Anyway back to my point, Bog standard clubman estates are being listed for £4500....there is one at a dealer for £8k. That to me seems silly money but I appreciate that there are numerous factors involved and both look very tidy

I narrowly missed a clubby estate at 1800 the other day. It wasn't mint but had full MOT. Gutted from gutsville

Know the feeling. There was one about 6 months ago being sold by a company who were restoring it but they were unable to complete it. Looked genuine rather than a shady back garage type of restoration bodge job. It had a Full strip down and rebuild. Just needed interior finishing. Sold for £1500.....gutted

That's fair enough :D I was watching the comments on Facebook and didn't understand why you'd be causing offence as you said you were only asking a question as I say it's not my car so I dnt really know too much about it so can't really comment on the spec :)

It's like those black wiper arms. They sell for 40 quid a pair on eBay, for a pair of faded second hand wiper arms! Purely because there is nothing else on the market (the main Mini suppliers are missing out on a big opportunity really).

Land Rover Defender arms fit almost right on, and they are £8 a pair brand new!

I always seem to sell stuff, and it goes for not too much, and yet someone else will sell the same thing and it goes for twice as much! And that's not just Mini related.

On the Mini front, what would annoy me is selling parts for say a tenner or so, and then watching that person put it on ebay and it sell for £50 or something daft.

Things are hugely over-priced, but I really don't see anyway to end it anytime soon - you can't just put out an announcement to everyone that its going to change as from tomorrow. There are so many people that don't use forums and the like and all they see is the huge prices on ebay and its a never ending circle.

Also, I (as will many others) genuinely have no idea what most of the bits I have is worth. The valuations section here is hit and miss in terms of getting a response and so the best way to find out is use ebay and check completed listings.

The price of actual cars is ridiculous. There is a guy with his GP on ebay at 11.5k, and its still there yet a Sport 5 was advertised at 13k (might be 14) and has sold. The number of standard MPi Coopers being advertised at 6-10k is also extremely high.

Those bits i bought off of you are going on my car and i am very grateful for them mate :-)

Personally, if i was to buy something off of someone cheap, i wouldn't be interested in selling it on for more if i decided i didn't need it.

The same goes for if i get stuff given to me. If i don't need it, i will give it away.

Its sad but, unfortunately I now refuse to give parts away to fellow mini owners anymore.

As a set of arches and a few other bits I gave to help someone with and project (well tencicaly they had the cheek to refuse to pay for) I recently spotted being sold off on eBay.

I've noticed there are a lot of rouge buyers on eBay nowadays that push bids up and don't pay. Just to mess you about. You see stuff selling for stupid money then it's relisted a week or so later, I've had it with some of my listings.

I agree about prices increasing in general. Especially on the obsolete parts. As time goes on part stocks dilute so the prices go up. But some people think they have got a proper dickinsons real deal on their hands!

On the other hand mini traders are now re-making a lot of the obsolete parts so that will hopefully bring the secondhand parts market down a bit?

I boxed a load of stuff up for a forum member which I was going to give him. He was going to send a courier and never did.

I'm planning a massive sale of mini parts once I workout what I need for my project and what I have spare.

I've got massive space problems at the moment, but hopefully this problem will be solved when I start putting my car back together.

Ebay is a bit hit and miss, and for a proper idea of prices try searching completed listings, this shows you what has actually sold
