Random question, does anyone have a hpi nitro MT or similar? basically the 1/10th nitro 4wd buggies. As the bloke in the local ish model shop, who just happened to be a hpi dealer, was about as helpful ass a kick in the nuts.

Something as basic as the wheel hex sizes.

As the bloke in the model shop (15 mile drive away) was really unhelpful saying that because the buggy I have is 15 years old etc, the only wheels/tyres that will fit it are the originals.

But the originals aren't available and the set I have are pretty much useless. On grass they grip roll and the truck digs in and flips over several times, on gravel they slide and wheelspin all over the place under the slightest bit of power and on tarmac you might as well be driving on ice.

I did have a set of wheels and tyres I bought cheap off eBay witch are pretty good in comparison, but are getting a bit worn. But I have no idea what they were originally for, just that they fit the wheel hexes and clear the steering arms.

If you let me know the full details, I'll have a look for you. I'm sure you'll find some suitable wheels somewhere. :highfive:

Karl your guy at the model shop is fobbing you off because he clearly doesn't know anything about that kit.

The HPI Nitro MT is indeed an old kit but there were several iterations of it including the MT2 and an MT2 SS with a larger engine. HPI still has old product pages on their website for all these kits, they also list spares and optional parts for them all.

Because of the era I'm relatively confident that the wheel hex will be 12mm; they're still widely available, just be careful of the OD as rock crawlers also use 12mm I believe.

http://hpiracing.wor...arch?q=nitro mt

Top results on there include all the models I mentioned above, MT, MT2, MT2 SS, etc. Have a look. There will be a plethora of 1/10th stadium truck (it's not classed as a buggy) wheels available on eBay and model shops like http://www.wheelspinmodels.co.uk/. In fact, they still sell the original MT wheels from HPI. You might want to try eBay though because new wheel/tyre sets get expensive very quickly.

I think he was fobbing me off trying to get me to buy one of hiss £300 kits to be honest.

But the truck/buggy/monster truck I'm looking for new wheels for is a gv predator or as it was sold in the use and aus a megatech tempest gladiator, both of witch finding parts for ( have a scrap one for parts) is near on impossible. Hence why I've used so many parts form other makes its more of a bitsa with just the chassis and main drive train original.

Also the wheel hexes on mine aren't original either, as originally it had tapered axles and press fit wheel hexes like the taper on a minis ball joints. The one big problem was if the wheels nuts were even slightly lose you'd loose drive to that wheel. So I quickly swapped those out for axles that use drive pins and 12mm hexes instead.

The only one question I do have and this is after watching a near new set of wheels nad tryes sell on eBay for just £6, is do the new ones now use 14mm hexes? As the eBay ones were advertised as being, but then I'm sure they use the same 5mm axles as most other so the larger hexes should just be a direct swap.

I know its a lot of messing around, but if the hpi wheels do have a 12 mm hex or if they have changed over to 14mm hexes? and I can make them fit it, opens up a huge variety of wheel/tyre combos.

Can you not just get some new tyres and fit them to the wheels you already have?

I could, but I think they are of an odd size being chevron monster truck wheels and tyres. And personally I'd prefer something a little smaller in diameter, as with the monster truck wheels is far too over geared.

A smaller spur gear would sort that problem out. :shades:

I've put a wanted add on one of the Facebook forums. :shades: Are you looking for another set of MT wheels, or is there different options? By HPI MT, I assume you mean the HPI Savage. to be honest, I would just buy a model that you can find part easily for. My Traxxas is the same, can't find a 'body & cage top' anywhere, and I mean anywhere. >_<  :tumble:

I'm stuck with my current spur gear, although I could probably go down a size with the clutch bell.

It would be a larger spur in order to gear it down ;)

At the moment I just want to know if the range of hpi buggy/truggy/stadium truck wheels use a 12mm or 14mm hex fitting.

Buying a new one is kind of out of the question though, both because of coat and the parts issue. But then I quite like the challenge of buying a load of random parts and making them work, as it would be boring keeping it standard.

Plus for its age my current buggy come monster truck isn't too bad. Try finding an r/c buggy/truck of the same age with a m16 engine and alloy tuned pipe, 100cc fuel tank, shaft driven 4wd (originally 2 speed), cvd's on all 4 wheels, turnbuckles for camber and steering, full ball bearings, threaded adjustable alloy shocks, full alloy upper and lower chassis, fully waterproof radio box and big chunky monster truck wheels/tyres.

No problem. I was just thinking you will break it, so nice to know you can buy spares on demand. :shades: Like I said, Had exactly the same problem with my Traxxas, and ended up buying nearly a whole buggy in bits from America for spares.

Back when I first got it running, as I was given it a good 8 or so years back as a non runner there did used to be somewhere local that I could buy spares from. And apart from the odd minor hiccup with the first few runs. like the ball bearings that I hadn't bothered to change failed in the rear diif and mashed the diff, or the one way bearing in the 2 speed sizing and eating the main shaft or the wheel hexes that loosened all the time. It's been pretty much problem free since I've fixed the problem areas and keep on top of regular maintenance, like bearings and replacing them before they fail and take out another diff. I also did buy (overpaid slightly) another complete one minus the engine that I can use for spares, but so far I haven't need them yet, even with the amount of times its ended up on its roof lol. Although because I have complete spare chassis, I'm trying to resist the temptation to strip the powder coating off it and polish it up like I did to the exhaust and swap them over.
