Thanks Colin, that is now crystal clear for me.  I will be doing that tomorrow / Sunday.

Sorry to hear about the spot welder.  It still should be under guarantee?  I hope you get it sorted!

Victor.

I'm a big fan of this mini, the colour, and interior are a perfect combination. A real time warp car. Glad to see it is on good hands. Good luck with the restoration, I'll be keeping a keen eye on this one!

Thanks mate, I agree this is a very nice Mini.  Not sure however about being in 'good hands', but I promise I will do my best!

Cheers

Victor.

Not much of a progress this weekend, but managed to seam weld the closing panels as advised by Colin. Some images of the process:

And same on the other side:

On this side I still need to close the gap in the corner, whcih I'm hoping to do next week.

Very satisfied with my welding this weekend, everything went well and very happy with the final result.

Victor.

Looking good mate

Only thing I would add is the closers should also be seam welded to the heelboard too like this

That really is a thing of beauty Ben and that standard is the reason I got you to do mine. Shame it's hidden on the underside .

Hi Ben,

Thank you so much for the picture and advice. That welding is something different, so perfectly done! Amazing!

Ben, how high is the power set on your welder when you weld ?

Do you have a video of you welding ? I WANT to weld like that.

Ben, how high is the power set on your welder when you weld ?

Do you have a video of you welding ? I WANT to weld like that.

All welders vary so my power settings probably won't help you

I Use an industrial 3 phase mig which is very powerful so is used on a low power setting

I also use .8 wire which is personal preference.

It's all about getting every setting dialed in correctly.

Wire speed, power, gas flow and remember that these setting need tweaking depending on what you are welding and how for instance, welding from beneath requires a slightly higher wire speed

The trick that is passed around a lot is to set up so that when you weld, you get an even crackle/sizzle. Mine sounds more like a loud even buzz

You don't want anything on the weld piece that will contaminate either

The other factor of course is weld duration.long enough to get that oenetration but not so long it blows a hole

it's a balancing act which only requires patience and time and good lighting and visibility is a must. That and you have to be completely comfortable before you start, not always easy when working on a mini i know

I'm afraid I don't have any video of me welding

Cheers

Ben

Nice one Gaspen!

I agree with Ben, there are so many factors to be considered when welding, and this is coming from a low skilled beginner as me!

It is great to have this forum and people wanting to get involved, commenting and adding their own experiences. This has helped me a lot since the start of my project, for which I'm grateful!

Keep it going!  One day we might be welding like Ben! ;))
