My fuel guage appears to be not working ,

I have checked the fuel sender and thats working ok. I checked the wiring anbd thats OK.

So I can only assume the actual guage is not working,

To test the guage directly.

do I put a positive 12 volts on one terminal and negative on the other ? should I then get a reading saying full ?

Here are 2 pictures of the guage I am talking about

Thanks

How did you check the sender?
If you did it by manually lifting the arm, the float may be full of fuel so not floating.

This is an early gauge.

Don't connect 12 V across the terminals unless you'd like to look for a new gauge. I don't have much experience with these but will pass on what I know.

The Terminal that has the double connectors on it is -ve 12 V (these were fitted to +ve Earth cars though, should work with reversed polarity).

Earth the Body of the Gauge.

These don't use a voltage stabaliser, just full 12 volts.

The other Terminal connects to the Sender, however, be aware these senders work 'back-to-front' to the later gauges. at zero ohms, it shows empty, and with 70 ohms from the single terminal to Earth, it should read full.

The gauges in these are not dampened, and so as fuel sloshes in the tank, the needle will swing about.

Thanks for posting that link, but sadly, that doesn't cover these particular gauges.

Thanks for that info Spider.

Obviously this guage is no good ,

However i have another one and don't want to make a mistake with the wiring ,

The other one I have is on a different speedo housing and does have a Stabiliser attached and acording to the wiring diagram I have it appears to have a 12 + direct to the fuel guage from A4  see below?

So My question is if I test this other fuel guage will it show it's working by putting 12+ to one side and earthe the other side as i dont want to damage it like I may have done to the other one ?

STABILISER

One of the wires on the stabiliser goes from the fuse box (A4) which is a positive live 12v together with a wire fron the same terminal to the wiper switch

On the other stabiliser terminal the wire goes to  the fuel guage.

FUEL GUAGE

One wire from the stabiliser

One wire to the fuel tank sender

Hope you can help

OK for the Stabaliser type Fuel Gauge, have a read of that article Gaspen linked up from FAQ, that covers a fair bit of it.
