HI all,

1995 - SPI - 1.3

Typically, we were due to attend a local classic car show this Sunday and the mini decided she didn't want to go!

Problem: At first, it sounded like it was misfiring, and then a 'tapping' sound started. Now, it won't idle properly and cuts out if not revved.

I've checked the vacuum pipes and all seem to be ok - replaced on a few weeks ago as it was cracked.

A few people have suggested it could be the head gasket, but could this cause both the bad idle, cutting out and the tapping sound??

Note, the tapping sound is coming from the 'top' of the engine.

I've bought a compression tester and will check the compression today and report back if there are any issues there.

Any ideas?

Too many to be useful.

A compression test will be a useful starting point. Take all the spark plugs out. Let the battery & starter recover between cranking.

I would take the rocker cover off and check the valve clearances first.

Hi,

Another thing to check is whether or not the top of a rocker adjuster screw is hitting the rocker cover.

Examine the inside of the cover carefully for any minor dents relative to the adjuster screws.

Thank you will check this - would this also cause the bad idle too?

When I got my car it ran like a bag of spanners and the engine clattered at very low RPM, it smoothed out once I got the revs up. I chased a bad/low idle for some time until it was eventually found to be a bad water temp sensor,  causing the ECU to over fuel.   Might not be the same as yours,  just sharing my experience, you will be able to tell if you are rich by a sooty exhaust,  or black plugs.  Good luck.
