Update...
Well it’s been a year (yikes that long) since i had the car in the road. And I have finally had the time and space to strip the engine down to see what the reason for it jamming in gear. When I went to a few mini garages they suggested it was the diff pin, which had snapped…
So first job was to pull the block away from the gearbox (after removing the flywheel)

With my limited knowledge of mini gearboxes, I think what’s happened is the speedo drive (which incidentally makes sense as I haven’t been able to get a reading on the speedo since I’ve had it) has sheared its casting mount and allowed the main shaft to flap or slop about causing the shaft bearings to break and also cause the crown wheel to score against the gearbox casing.
Speedo drive

These are the ball bearings, which have shattered.

As you can see from the photo below the diff has scored against the box, which I assume is the reason the wheels freed up every now and then.

And here is the some of bearing balls and bits found in the bottom of the gearbox! :S

So hopefully in the next few days I will have a look at a mates metro turbo box, which he is going to sell me. Hopefully that should reduce the power loss to the wheels!!

Well the car is along way of roadworthiness but at least I know what caused the problem..
Thanks for reading, have a good crimbo…. Aron. (m4m)
