holy cow! make sure your bottom end is strong enough

yeah i'm thinking standard gears, but uprated clutch, the super flywheel, and maybe i'll fork out for an X-pin diff...as for the bottom end the crank is good i'm told....hopefully nothing else needs uprating! might need to get new pistons though...if i do i'll bore it out to 1130 (as i said) while i'm at it....price of motor will decrease if i need to buy new pistons! :dozing:

alright, today I went in and totally stripped the gearbox down to the case. I'm sending it and the outer casing to get acid dipped, and cleaning all the gears etc. they're all in good condition. My boss (the kind man selling me the engine) bought 1100cc pistons 4 the motor and he has a 1100 crank, so it'll pretty much be a 1100. I'm going to get an uprated cam to go with the rare flywheel, twin carbs, and reworked head. I think i may need better brakes....are 998 cooper discs and calipers cheaper than the cooper s ones? are there any drum options? and will the stnd suspension be fine? i don't need it lowered or anything. thanks.

went in today, cleaned up all the transmission components and boxed them up ready to be put together once everything else is ready. Also found a very early Mk1 grille, that is bent and has lots of surface rust, but i'm going to clean it up and then bang it back into shape.already have cleaned it up quite a bit. This will change the course of the rebuild more than you know. I am now going to do it very retro/classic, but not original.'twill be white w/a black roof, a classic interior, with whatever seats i can find (maybe from another classic car) and with my fastish engine. might do mini special arches, don't think i have to with 10 by 5s. going to be a real nice classic. probably with a roof rack as well, to spunk it up (and for it's versatility).by the way it was chromed when i got it, might keep i like that, or white or black.

Went back in today, started taking apart the engine, to it's components, just took off a couple bits, the head studs were extremely tight, but i got them :). Also, we found some balanced con rods to put in it, and apparently the pistons came in too. So pretty much what I'll have is a 1098 engine, with a super rare flywheel, twin carbs, 12g202 head, reground cam, really solid transmission and probably a good exhaust. will be painted BMC green. On the outside I'll have old school wheels, chrome wheelarch trim, early grille w/surround, mk1 taillights with red top lenses. it will be white with a black roof. i'll sort out the interior as well. Here's pics of the block as it stands, the rods and the wheels i will probably get. CMF

well looks like you have parts pilling up... now start putting things together.... and don't paint that grille; it would be a sin.

yeah gunna keep it chrome, might have to use that spray on chrome as it's quite pitted and in parts either flaked off ITHINK or i just need to scrub harder w/my steel wool! stuff will go together as soon as it's all here so then i'll have a full engine ready to drop in when the bodywork is done. which is now worrying my because this school shop is getting more and more behind and i have no where near enough money to get it done proffesionally...=]

seems like a cool engine build, and a cool old skool car. what date is approx your due date for the project? if nothing goes wrong.

as soon as I get money, it more depends on bodywork, as i don't know if this school will take it, they seem backed up, and if they don't, i have no money for bodywork :( so may take a while. engine will be done reasonably soon though!

Stipped down more of the engine today, down the the bare block in fact. Found some good bits, a duplex timing chain, and the new pistons came in with new rings. I also found two old deep dish steering wheels that I'll try to fit, one has worse leather. also my mk1 tailights. enjoy. o and the transmission case came back from being dipped. the engine block will be off shortly.

Just been in today, spent around eight hours cleaning up everything off of the engine, sand blasted some of the bits to be painted and used paint remover and a screw driver on the block. Also the former owner (not the man I'm buying it off, the guy before that) decided blue silicon could be good to put underneath the gaskets. Fun to remove. Here's some pics, the block has since been scraped down to pretty much metal, just a few splotchs of colour. Then I'm going to have to do the head. Bead blasting was an interesting experience.Posted ImagePosted Image Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

well today i stripped most of the paint off the block, and painted up my new transmission (all put together :-, by Ken, didn't even know till I showed up! i painted it then) and I think it looks fantastic. Engine and components will get same treatment. here's piccys of the painted tranny and parts, stripped block, and blasted bits, from the engine.Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

It was to go off to my neighbour's high school, but the teacher is so far disappointed with the students work ethic and skill (it is a high school), but it might go in soon, i hope, as I will have no spare cash after buying the engine. This might not have been the best of planning, but I want everything done right, so I'll wait if i have to pay for it's resto, as learning to weld isn't an option. Parents said so, and I'm 13, so not much choice. Will get a good deal on the engine (:-) but he's not in the body trade, so I can't be taught (like he's been doing this whole time with the engine and things) so I will have to pay, but I was talking to a guy who painted a recently restored mini at the shop, and he said if i go to him i can help with prep, etc, to keep costs down. He might do bodywork too. hopefully, it'll go into the high school either soon or next fall. So while it's waiting for bodywork I can't check out the brakes and suspension, as it needs to roll into the shop, and I'[m afraid things will break when I try to take them off. So i'm stuck. Engine going along good though!
