seems like every month you read my 1970 shell was beyond repair so i picked up this 2002 shell and used that

But then used the V5 from the rot box 1970's mini to get free road tax.

I know some might not like it, but if they scraped free road tax for cars built before 73 or what ever year it is, I’m sure most of this selling of V5's would stop, as there wouldn’t be much point in swapping the cars ID to dodge paying road tax each year.

For my 2ps worth, I'm not particularly bothered about ringing. If people want to go ahead and do it - fine, but expect to pay the consequences if you get caught. If its something stupid, like a late sportpack pretending to be a 60s cooper then it just makes you think whoever buys it must be an utter retard. Personally, I would never tell the DVLA about someone ringing a car, and I think that while posts on this site selling V5s/identities (of which there are very few) should be deleted, TMF should not actively inform DVLA of rung cars.

An utter retard? oh dear oh dear.....the look of the car hasnt changed that much if you were new to mini's and not interested in their history!
Fair enough if you want to take the chance yourself, but most are going to want to sell it one day!

Ok, so maybe utter retard was a little strong. But still, if you were investing in what you were told was a genuine 60s cooper wouldnt you check it out to see that it actually was. I mean multi point injection is hardly a 60s invention is it? I'd like to think that even someone with a limited knowledge of cars could work it out.
People are going to keep doing it because they can sell these cars. The problem is that its so easy to do to a mini - the vin plate is held on by a few rivets, and a skim of filler gets rid of the body number on the scuttle. change the engine, or just grind the two rivets off that hold the engine number, and you have yourself a blank canvas.

what next we going to have to report fellow mini people for driving there minis while not taxed, moted or properly insured ie not declearing modifcations! this is getting a bit silly.ok i think tmf should delete posts for items for sale which include v5s and other ileagal things but i think the reporting of such vehicles or people has nothing to do with the mini forum and imo i think people who ring minis or sell v5 and are trying to make a profit out of it should be first warned about there actions then if they ignore them ban them from the mini forum.also i would like to add its not illegal to sell a v5 it is illegal to use in on another car though! i think some one should write to the mags about this!lets see what they have to say!

BarryBoys dot com actively advertise the fact that every barried car that is found is researched through the DVLA so hopefully the scum can be removed from the road.

In my eyes, this is the same. A ringed car is just that. A ringed car. Everybody else goes by the book and ensures their car is what it says it is, they tax it, they insure it, it's all 100% legal.

Ringing a car is illegal and therefore anything after that is fraud.

It is illegal to sell a V5, you don't own a vehicle identity, the DVLA does, and they can revoke a vehicles identity at any time. Therefore you cannot sell what you do not own!

so you buy a brand new shell from a reputable supplier and? it is not illegal to reshell a car as long as the dvla are informed in pen and ink, and you only reshell the car, not ring it, ringing a car is reshelling a vehicle without informing the authorities that be, i know because i have reshelled a vehicle legally. MIFF.

Interesting topic!

I dont think v5's should be sold on TMF, as it is plainly illegal.
Reporting people is a bit strong, what happens if you get it wrong and someones pride and joy gets crushed?! (Unikely I know, but still scary)

Sorry to say but you don't know. You CANNOT reshell a vehicle using a bodyshell that has already been registered. There are many threads on this and its clearly stated on the DVLA website.

A ringer is completely different to a Cat C write off.

In the true sense of the word, a 'Ringer' is a car that has had the identity (license plates, VIN number, etc) taken from another car on the road, thats the same, so you effectively get two identical (mostly) vehicles on the road, both with the same identification. A lot of people in this thread, and generally, use the term 'ringer' to describe a car that has had its identification replaced with that of another car (however it maybe that that car was scrapped or isn't on the road).

A Cat C write off is a vehicle that has been in an accident and was deemed too expensive to repair compared to the vehicles value (theres percentages at play in there somewhere). However, Cat C and Cat D write offs can be bought back from the insurance companies, repaired and put back on the road. The condition is that they have to go through a VIC check (just confirm it still has the same identity, and hasn't been reshelled (or has been reshelled legally), and an MOT to make sure its now safe for public roads.
