Cheers Dan.

I'm hoping to get the cam carrier on later tonight. Maybe get the cams timed in too.

Looking forward to getting it completed shortly.....well, the engine that is.

I had to go and buy a long reach 14mm socket for those bent studs today....and cut down a couple of allen keys to get past those tight springs to torque the head down.

Just off to look at your thread and see how you are doing :shifty:.

Hehe, you would laugh if you saw the number of sawn off allen keys in my tool chest for various tricky jobs!

....I know what you mean.

I bought a new set of imperial keys a couple of weeks ago.

Started doing the head then realized I couldn't get the usual socket in between the exhaust valves.... so had no choice but to cut them up. Hoping they wouldnt round off. Thankfully they didnt. Thankfully I had a few old 1/4 drive sockets that fit them too. They will be going in a special box out of the way now....just for that job.

The two side bolts were a tight fit and only just screwed in. Not sure if they are absolutely necessary but put them in anyway.

...shims and buckets (followers)

The shims have to be ground down individually to provide a correct valve gap for the follower.

.....fitting the timing pulleys, belt and tensioner.

Belt is tensioned so that it can be 'relatively' easily twisted 90 degrees on the longest length of belt. Not too tight....but not slack either.

....almost complete.

Cams need lubricating before cover can be screwed down. This is done by removing a couple of cam caps (first and last), and pumping oil through the cam oil feed hole until it comes out of the other hole. Failure to do this can result in premature cam bearing wear.

Engines looking great! Can't believe I've missed this project up til now!

Are you sure the undertray is the best idea? I'm sure I've read that the flat sheet type were not used in F1 after a season or two, because if you disturbed the airflow greatly (ie, go over a kerb on a race track) it looses the downward force generated by the undertray, which results in a loss of grip and several cars span out mid corner because of this?

What do you do for a job? I'm impressed by your modifications to the MJ software to allow you to use it on laptop or smartphone! Wondered if this was connected to your job?

are those shoms not the same size as any motorcycle ones? as the would be pretty easy to get hold of if you could find out what would work...

Hi Jammy,

Sorry for not getting back sooner, I missed your post.

Thanks for the compliments....pity I cant afford a nice steel bottom end for the KAD engine like Dans. Thats the problem with having 2 cars.... One with 7 port and one with KAD head. My resources are running very thin now! Worst thing is I get an idea for one.....and I just have to replicate it on the other to some degree...which means twice the work. It wasnt supposed to be like that!

When I fitted the undertray to the back of the car I noticed an immediate difference in the way the back end was holding to the road, especially on the motorway. In addition as a side benefit I noticed a reduction in road noise too which I hadnt expected. I would imagine the air flow disturbance on an F1 car would be more dramatic due to the very light weight of the F1 cars relative to their high accelleration factor and high speeds they drive at. Its just a personal theory though. I kind of understand all that as I used to race yachts....which uses similar principles albeit they are verticle rather than horizontal.

I have a few bits of jobs I do. One of which is designing databases and another is building, and maintaining IT systems. I picked up the software for the smartphone from someone else and slightly tweaked the code to pick up the bluetooth port instead of the COM1 port. It was really easy. I have the code I can give you if you have a smartphone and a serial bluetooth dongle. I used the Socketcom bluetooth serial adapter with mine. Handy being able to dial into the car from the house and monitor the engine whilst sat at the dinner table. No kidding.

Kind regards, David

Hi supermotolee I'm not sure to be honest. I guess it would be a case of measuring up with the vernier caliper and seeing what is around. Can be a hard task though not knowing what you dont know if you see what I mean.

I had wondered what the K100/1100/1200 shims looked like, assuming they use shims. I cant imagine them being hydraulic.

Kind regards,

David

Hi ...... ive been quiet for a while. This is because I had the chance of a free swap over of the cams from some 'KAD2' 260 duration (pulling circa 110-130 bhp) to a pair of 'L14' 280 duration (130-150 bhp cams). Nice considering they cost £300 each and I need 2! The guy who swapped them though is using the 260 to turbo a moggie and the profile of the KAD2 is the same as a Cossie Turbo. Winners all round. (Cheers Dan for pointing me in the direction on that one!) Long wait due to postal strike.

Just ready to put it in for MOT next friday (weee!) and get the jetting for the twin 40s done as its running like a dog at the moment. Need to fit the mirrors and some bits and pieces.

Some latest pictures with bonnet on. As you can see, compared to a normal Midas Gold I had to extensively modify the bonnet to get it over the cam pulleys and belt. Paint job needs cutting back but it will do for now....and the bumper needs hanging on better too.

Other jobs need doing like refitting the heater, but thats just extra weight!

Kind regards,

David

That will be mental once the engine is set up!
