I would drop the subframe and engine out. You'll have more space to work and it will make it easier.

Dropping the engine and subframe is a doddle matey, it's just common sence really.Take lots of pictures as your going too and you'll have no trouble! Label your wiring and ensure you keep your fastenings safe and it makes the job twice as easy again.

Also take a look at all the nuts and bolts that you are going to need to undo so you can get the subframe and engine out, and give them a good soaking in DW40 or release oil so they come off nice and easy and minimise rounding off nuts and bolts and shearing them off.

I've guessed that it could be off the road for maybe a month or two.. taking into consideration the limited time I get to spend on her. So I think dropping the engine out shouldn't be a problem, once I'm there I want to do a good job. So yeah that seems like a good plan.

Dan remembered I owed him 100 notes for bumping into his back end so I've gotta cough that up in the new year

What are you opinions on doing a flat spray job with cans? I love the look of this MK1 VW sprayed with cans.

With a glossy black roof.. I think it would definitely look a damn sight better than patches of primer & white fiberglass on the front.

Just an idea!

The flat look is a really nice look, just hard to keep up.

Cheers for the copy of the Haynes manual! I've already got a hard copy but that stays in the mini so it's good to have on one my laptop I can bring up when I need it

Hard to keep up?

No clear coat on it... so dirt and stains can get imbedded in it quite easy.

Unless there is a way to do it with a clear coat?

I'll have to do some reading up on it, I wouldn't do it anyway until I've either treated or replaced all the panels that need doing. I'd probably gut it and spray the inside too..

Oh and someone asked the bloke selling the Lucas headlamps,

Q: Hello, just a quick questions, do these headlights require specific P700 headlamp rims or will my standard mini ones fit? thank you, Rich 04-Oct-08
A: hi your standard rims will be fine

So that's okay.

Can't wait to get paid on the 26th :D

Here is what my friend that does bodywork / paint told me:

I have sucessfully painted, then cleared, then sanded, for the flat look.

That's the best way... cause if you change your mind, all you gotta do is buff it.
