I told you everyone forgets the speedo cable :).

Fairdoes, then yes, you need to disconnect a few things:

Anything that looks like its going into the bulkhead to/from the engine.

Hahhah ! True, but technically i covered it!

Steering rack! :)

You cant see it from just looking at the engine and down it but it bolts through just above the floor pans. Was a right pain when trying to lift the shell to find that we forgot to undo that!

Having a cuppa tea break :)

Getting there with disconnecting everything! Had a problem with the nearside shock absorber, it was seized at the top.. after a good soak in WD40 and using a crowbar to lever it off I managed to get that done, can't think what I've actually done.. but I know I've only got the rod on the gear selector (which means I need to deal with the bloody roll pin ), steering rack, brake lines & subby mounts to go!

Dez, I don't actually need to drain the oil, or do I?

Well, you're gonna want to split the engine from the subframe eventually?

Unless you're not touching it. If your just dropping it out to clean up and paint, then put it back in and fire her up again, i guess not.

If you take the pot joints off the gearbox, the oil runs out of them. Its easier to drain it now, rather than when its on the floor and you can't get anything under it to catch the oil. As to holes in the bulkhead, I welded mine up. If you're half decent with a welder it takes no time at all, and looks much better. You don't need to take the rack off to drop the subframe - just undo the track rod ends. It comes off much easier without the subframe in the way. Parkers do recon exchange ones for £22, so its worth doing while its all in peices.

Missed all that advice about the steering rack because I was outside, oh well.. so close today! got a kick in the teeth when I realised the big nut for the top subby mount was at Grandads! but Dad's going across there on Tuesday so he can pick it up then

So today everything that needs disconnecting is disconnected, I think.. I'll find out for sure when we try and lift the body over the engine.

Couldn't get the fapping roll pin out of the rod so I cheated and just dropped the gear lever out :) I need to sort the reverse light anyway as it doesn't come on when reverse is selected.. anyway, pictures!

Dead impressed that I managed this all myself.. considering this year I was only doing little jobs like replacing the front indicator lenses!

When Dad gets the big nut from Grandads, should just be a case of undoing the two top 'turrent' mounts and then lifting the body over the engine.

Doubt it'll go that easily but that's the plan!

Good progress today  Careful with lifting the body over engine as stuff catches on the front panel, you'll also need to suppot the subframe with bricks or something so it doesnt fall on its side, especially with the gearbox linkage still attached!

That roll pin is an absolute *woman of ill repute* to get out, i didnt bother with the engine in because i couldnt get it out so did what you've done and even when the engines out its a pain, me and my dad spent a whole day at the garage trying to get it out, we tried everything, mine was in the most awkward spot i couldnt line anything up with it at all :) Sorted it in the end though, it was weird how must space it takes up in the garage when it sticks out where your walking.

Good Luck with it.

Cheers mate, well it's gotta come off because I ripped the gaitor off to get to the roll pin easier, came across one of these kits on Mini Spares, link, so I'll replace it with that

& about the front panel.. might angle grind it off to make it easier & the subby is already resting on blocks of wood :)
