if you are going to do it use later doors and a posts but stregthen them so you can use mk1 hinges this is what im looking to doing far less work and you can still have wind down windows.

My doors, a panels, door steps & door hinges all need replacing anyway.. been in contact with a bloke on Ebay whose selling a pair, it's an auction but I messaged him asking how much he wanted for both, stated 200 quid.. I could probably knock him down a bit, they come with all the internals as well, hinges, glass, door pocket kick plates etc..

My current doors are in a right state, they'd need reskinning, where the door sits against the sill is riddled full of 3cm holes the whole length across & where the door frame meets the 'main body' of the door is rusted as well.

I'm sure a pair of MK1 doors will crop up again in the future, so I can worry about that then rather than now.

Opinions? I'm just a lad who knows what looks good at the moment.. no clue about welding & bodywork, yet.

I think MK1 doors are different to MK3's i think the rear panel was longer so the doors shorter?

Oh hello there sexy BMC painted engine :)

Spent the afternoon doing this after college, finished cleaning her up & then I wanted to put a test patch on to see how it looks, I got carried away and did the whole thing :P

Then once it had been painted I cleaned up the oil pipe with a fine ball of wire brush & put that back on, I don't want to spray bits like that up in silver paint because I much prefer the period look of bare metal. Got new bits like an oil filter, spark plugs, rocker cover, uprated water pump etc.. on the way to finish everything off though :(

I'm well happy >_<

Like jackman says, mk1 doors are a totally different shape. I assumed you were fitting mk1 hinges to mk3 doors. Thats also not the best solution because they weigh so much it puts lots of extra stress on the hinges.

Nope, was actually going to buy some MK1 doors and fit them.

The only difference in shape is the bottom of the door near the a-panel, where it's curved rather than a 90 degree angle, no? >_<

They're a different shape all round i think. I'll have a measure between my two tomorrow and report back...

Seriously dude, words cannot say how much I hate mk1 doors. They caused so much trouble with the van, and they're still giving me grief now. I can't leave it out in the rain because it pisses in through the crap slidy windows and floods the footwells. The locks are pathetic, the door cards are a nightmare to fit, the hinges have dropped and are taking paint off, the seals spend most of the time falling off and the slidy windows dont open enough to rest your arm on the door or let in a decent amount of air. Basically they suck massively.

Oh and it's my birthday tomorrow

Happy birthday!!

If u want to fit external hinges, as i remember mk1 doors as slightly shorter than mk3 doors so the swap its quite tricky and requires a lot of trimmings. You can either fit external hinges on later doors, personally i'd go for FG or alluminium doors as external hinges cant handle a 19kg weight door (as mk3 are).
ah.. that bmc green is so cool! :(

Thankyou all :(

Got a fantastic Clarke toolbox & a big Clarke spanner set from the parents, thought I was too old for good present but I guess I squeezed one more year out of them

& Andrew, it's the paint from that MGB site you posted the link up for :dozing: will be leaving the box & bell housing as they are, they've been cleaned back to metal but I love that, much more period & nicer IMO. Although I will freshen up the timing cover with some black paint.
