If you have undone all the bolts around the bottom, then get a big bar and lever the block up away from the box. You dont have to touch the timing chain end.
Why are you splitting the two anyway?

What can I lever against?

I need to get the sump plug helicoiled so my logic was that if I split the two, a) it'd be so much easier in getting the gearbox to the garage & b) i can flush out any debris from the gearbox and generally make sure everything is nice and tidy.

Thanks again for the flywheel puller James! :)

& cheers Nick! :) hopefully run sweet as a nut when it's back together, hardly doing any modifications but the aim is just a nice healthy engine. Noticed how shabby the bottom half is, when it's all apart I'll give it a blast with the pressure washer.

Nice work getting the flywheel off :)

What ever you do, do not jam anything between the two mating faces of the gearbox and block as you could damage them meaning oil leaks. I think there is a way of levering using the engine mounts on the gearbox. You could try putting the engine upside down so it is gearbox up and tap around the edges with a rubber mallet to try and break the seal.

I lift the engine off the gearbox , banging it around until it starts too give.
As said don't try leavering the engine off the box using the mating surfaces as they will leak oil.
Another thing I do is hang the engine about 5-10mm off the deck, and then tap the gearbox off with somthing like carpet or cardboard for it to land on.

Got it off  nice, easy and heavy! just about broke my back in the process. So once that was off I took the gearbox & other bit (name?) outside onto the driveway for some degunking & a spray with the power washer.

They aren't perfectly clean and degreased, but I don't want them that way.. it's a rally styled car so a bit of tidy oil here and there is more than welcome :P

They've been left out to dry, will make sure they are both dried out throughly.

I've come to a halt, minispares emailed me and told me the cone compressor was out of stock.. so I told them to cancel the order and I'll put a new one through with some other bits when I get back.. clutch, oil pump & other assorted bits that I've since discovered I need to buy since breaking the engine a bit more.. little things like new bolts & gaskets.

Don't think there is going to be any more process until I come back from Centre parcs on the 31st, then I get paid again on the 7th :(

How did you get it off in the end? Looking good, are you not tempted to slide in a cheaky cam while your doing all this work?

I got a crow bar between near where the speedo housing is and the plate that's behind the timing gear.. just to break the seal and lever things apart, then I just stood over it, grabbed where I could and hauled it off.

Oh god yes, I'm so tempted to go all out and spend a good few months wages on making her a feisty little 998cc, but I'm afraid I can't at the moment.. I'd much rather spend that money on getting her on the road quicker!

But we can talk about cams, just to put a bee in my bonnet :P and so I can understand it all a bit more, what would I benefit from? I guess that if I upgrade the cam, I'd need to upgrade other things to cope?

other than some stiffer springs not really

always things worth doing cam followers, timing chain, oil pump but again down to budget and what ur after 1.3 ratio rockers are good on 998's

1.3 rockers wont make much difference on a 998 like luke's spec. Infact they probably wouldn't make that much difference on a 1275 but that's not the question in hand. Followers, pump and duplex are a good upgrade. Not neccesarily needed but worth doing if you've got the engine apart.

What benefits does a Duplex timing chain give? I've seen them on Minispares and they aren't expensive at all so that could be a worthy upgrade.

& cam followers? I presume they just need replacing for the sake of wear?

I think the duplex is done to stop chain stretch. Keeps the cam in time.

Yeh, it's just for wear on the followers.

If you are going to go to the trouble of putting a cam in then you mayswell port your head. Wont see too much of a difference with just the cam and without the head to match. Vizard has all the info on head porting.
