Chapter 2 - strip n paint.

well, were on target - a couple of corners have had to be cut - like masking up parts of the engine bay - but theres only a few minor bits of overspray, and what there is is either getting ripped out or replaced anyway.

matt black has been the order of the day - easy to touch up and it makes the shiny blue anodised bits stand out more.

all the subframe sub assemblies have been stripped, wire brushed, scrubbed and painted and its all looking pretty good.

radiator shroud, wiper motor cover and clutch slave cylinder mount paint have all been painted in spangle blue - but theyre at work and I forgot photos.

John got his special tool out to fit bearings properly - tapered this time - so with his proper fitting, hopefully they'll last more than 600 miles this time :(

next - strap it all together and bung it back in the engine bay...........................

as requested - pics of engine.......................

its all strapped up and ready to go - tonights lessons:

Quick release engine mounts suck - not as simple as they suggest
manifold clashed with subframe - had to notch it a little
hot water outlet fouls with alternator - so it needs chopping, turning through 90 deg. and tig welding together again
alternator needs some pretty long mounting brackets
its tall! hope it fits under the bonnet - should do, others have.
doughnuts, hi-los and re-furbed top arms fit really easily without a compression tool if you swear really really loud.

Its all coming together really well, and we should be on track to have it in the mini over the weekend.

Know the feeling!

Whys the alternator need differnt brackets? Should fit in the normal way assuming your sticking with the side rad.

its a clearance issue with the water outlet on the head - we're going to modify the short pipe and if that works out OK we should get away with standard alternator bracket's

Which is sort of what I did on mine except I made a completly new outlet to include the ecu temp sender. It just needs to come striaght out from the head and not dip down as the standard one does.

Apparently a K1200 outlet fits without modifying at all

long night tonight - made up for a bit of a lost weekend. engine / subframe is pretty much ready to go, we've lost one of the pots so canr get second driveshaft and hub finished just yet.

blue nuns doing her best herbie style wheelie in readyness for the re-fit.

New problem - having looked closer at the rather shabby dry-deck hoses and fittings they are leaking - or weeping at least, and thats only after a dyno run so we dont have much confidence in it. to be honest it looks pretty shabby anyway.

plan is to rip it out and do something far more robust - I'm going to laser cut a couple of sections of 6mm plate - one to bolt up to the top of the block over the core plug, which will be removed, weld a short length of tube to the plate so giving a better water outlet. We'll try and get an O ring closure to the rear to keep it water tight, it can bolt up at the top, and a second 10mm plate will be bolted over to secure the bottom edge by bridging over and between the top 2 bolts on the clutch housing.

we'll try it in aluminium and steel - ally will be easier to machine for the O-ring, but steel will give better strength - might end up being a mix of the 2.

Its a tad experimental but if it works it'll make for a much more trustworthy dry deck plumbing point.

John also wondered whether it was a good opportunity to incorporate an oil cooler to help with water cooling, mainly due to the ease and facility of the broad diameter hoses and fittings.

i have had a bung made up and welded into the block for my dry deck. and another bung for the head then i am using a single 180 degree silicon hose for the water.

I am sure i read somewhere that oil coolers used as water coolers are inefficient. maybe a heater core would be better as extra cooling?

what are you using for the ignition and injection control?

I'm using an aftermarket ECU supplied, programmed and Dyno tested by EXON Race Engines -next door neighbours to morspeed.

It was Exons Dyno that was usd to set the engine up and programme the maps. Paul has a broad range of maps ready to go as hes helped with a lot of the research work with Morspeed on their BMW 16V conversions.

does welding to cast steel work very well ? I'm a bit lacking in this area but always beleived it to be very problematic ?
