For better advice, look here www.mig-welding.co.uk
Another thing is I'm pretty sure you shouldn't mix ally and steel.
For laser cut stainless steel I use I company calles syspal in Telford
http://www.syspal.eu/
They do one offs and are quite cheap, also do loads of cool stuff
Oh yeah, looking GOOOOD!!

little bit of jiggling and poking with podgers but its in, all bolted up and even the bonnet fits fine - theres about 1/2 inch clearance above the rocker cover.
We looked at it for the first time in place and realised that getting a decent air feed to the throttle bodies may need some funneling of some kind.
I dragged the old bent bonnet back in and threw some holes in to see what bonnet vents might do to help, and might look like, but the holes are too high really, and will only drown the top of the engine bay with snot, filth and rain so we wont be doing it on the good bonnet.
things are looking really good to have her ready for IMM and the outstanding list kinda stands like this:
return fuel lines back to tank
fit Mpi tank and see whether the pump is man enough for the job - cant really do this till its running
install loom for ECU
mount ECU
finish re-mounting brake lines and servo - bleed brakes
make up hoses and tubes for cooling and mount radiator
mount coil pack and plug up
make forward engine brace / steady
make revised bracketry for dry deck plumbing.
question to anyone in the know - how or where can I take a vacuum feed for the brake servo off the BMW head? any advice warmly welcomed.
PS. anyone want a bonnet with 4 air vents in it - make you go faster !

I've had similar thoughts about my bonnet but for the time being am going to leave it as is, till I can think of a way to sort it without resorting to big holes
I don't think the standard injection pump is up to the job by the way I went down the toota route but know others have replaced the pump with a ford puma one I think it was

thanks for that - I thought it might be the case.
I used a 3 series bosch pump on the R1 and a regulator / filter, i think we ought to go the same way on this one.
the holes on the bonnet thing definately doesnt help much - we're going to template up a funnel to go from a section of the front grill and feed upto the throttle bodies.

Might be worth giving me a shout in the future shifty. I've used Syspal before, but there are loads of others too. Now I work at a stainless steel fabrication company that do a lot in the dairy and plumbing industry, so we carry all sorts of stainless tubes, sheet, plumbing fittings etc.

Thanks Matt
Pm me some details, we are always using stainless steel tube, fittings etc.
I have only just had a 316 hopper made as well!!
Syspal used to knock me stuff up out of their offcuts, dealt with a guy Called Ray Newton there.

tonight was a night of fiddly silly bits :
top engine steady - had to bring an old KAD steady out of retirement as the manifold was touching the bulkhead with the factory steady. Lost the KAD spacers so had to make some out of old brass shopfitting spares
bottom engine steady - went on sweet as a nut
crankcase breather - had to cut, bend and weld it to clear the brake servo
alternator bracket extensions - not as big as I thought they would have to be and they work brilliant - alternator clears everything and still sits behind the grill
started to look at final positioning for forward brace but got too cold and came home to the warm.
Saturday will be the next big push on fuelling and cooling.

Roofless, whats the bar running across the slam panel?
we're considering removing part of the slam panel to give better clearance for airfilters to the throttle bodies - and make space for a possible turbo up-grade at a later date.
the bar would be welded in just below the remainder of the slam panel as re-inforcement, we would also put in a couple of gussets to facilitate a front engine steady onto the BMW head.
