ok as its been so long i've decided to completely wipe the slate clean and start again, and hopefully not stall this time.

so here's how she looks now:

Posted Image
at least half of her looks like this! keeps me going and remembering what im aiming for.

the business end, will take the exhaust off and try to get rid of as much clutter as possible
Posted Image

my box of various bits, gaskets and a new radiator for the 998.
Posted Image
also have 2 a-panels and a floor panel (cant remember which side), so at least thats a start on the metalwork...

the *illegitimate person*ised floor and mess in the front
Posted Image

the mucky 998, still to be cleaned. hopefully tomorrow.....then rebuilt and repainted.

that blasted engine stand i bought is still not in use and taking up lots of space >_<

im tempted david just because im interest to see how much it would pull out. but i want to jig it properly as well just so i know its straight. Its going to end up costing so much anyway it might as well be a proper proper-job. especially seeing as even your mate was impressed by the damage!

one question david, should i get the panels i need before i take her to the bodyshop? as theyll need to be welded on while on the jig anyway, tho i dont know if ill need a new bulkhead/floor yet. but sills, windscreen panel (or half of) and the crossmember will need to be done anyway.

also, does anyone have any tips on dissembling rusty, stuborn exhaust systems? ive got a proper nark on!

neatened everything up a bit more now, wiring loom gone and a few other bits so you can see the damage a bit more.

the top half of the bulkhead looks ok, only the bottom half has been squashed where it was pushed by the subframe. however im not entirely sure as the parcel shelf has been buckled.

Up bright and early today to clean the engine, nice messy job but looks quite a bit better now, especially the manifold side. Although it will all be repainted anyway.

I still think your dads right you need a new shell. but saying that get a pro to look at it, and that means a reckonised body repairs and not a monkey.
good luck

to be honest oli the best thing to do is get it to FCB and let them get on it. they can get the parts for if you want, it really depends on how you plan to budget for it.

they will fit whatever panels you supply to them in the end so give me a shout and we can go from there.

the shell will straighten, no doubt about that as the panel beater said, he said it was hard hit, but not irrepairable. And once all the rot is cut out and replaced it will be all good again. you can always discuss with them about strengthening the floors afterwards with some additional plating or similar.

you know where i am if you need to get hold of the bodyshop etc :(

good work though Oli :withstupid:

Thanks andrew, very helpful indeed  at one stage it was running very rich, then towards the end it was running lean due to the carb not being set uo properly and having a normal needle instead of the stg 1/modified needle, and the advance was waaaay out. it was due to be sorted at MLM a week after i crashed! :P

You still might well be right mike, but i want to have a go with this shell first. but as you and david said, ill get it to FCB first for them to have a proper look.

Thanks david, i'll be in touch at some point soon to talk about options and where to go next. also need to think about getting her to fcb as well. and ill want a quote from fcb first just to make sure i do have the money when it comes to the paying part. then itll be down to saving up for the paint job :)

theIMAGE, thanks :) as i said ive got an engine stand but you need an adaptor plate to fit to the a-series and i just cant be bothered with it so the skateboard got the vote. not the easiest to move around and its annoying when your trying to loosen the head bolts and it twists the whole engine and falls on your foot :) but otherwise its good. The 998 will be painted the correct 998 yellow again, it will just look nice and new. the original plan is for something a bit more lairy to go in but it all depends on monies and its not looking good at the moment. so she might be 998 again for a while.

ok ive been getting on a bit more today although most of my time has been spent clearing the garage as it was getting silly again!

is there any chemical product i can use to dip some of the components in to get rid of the last bits of grime, grease, grit and rust, ready for painting? things like the timing and flywheel cover and all the little brackets and bits.

also, how far should i go with the rebuild for the 998? i need to replace the clutch housing and the sump anyway, so a fair bit needs to be taken off. and i want to check the gearbox is ok, but i dont really want to get into completely taking the block apart. the aim was only to check that the 998 is all ok after the accident, then to tidy it up and sell it on, although i may be using it for a bit now. the engine i eventually want to put in will be fully dismantled, cleaned, checked and rebuilt to the correct spec. but how far should i go with this one?

for cleaning metal components
chuck them in a big pot or tray with a gallon or two of vinegar,
the normal household stuff is best
or if you want to really speed things up get a bit of electrolysis going in the pot (just watch out for the noxious fumes) >_<

ok just bought a weber for the viva so i need to get the mini project rolling again, i feel guilty lol.

Need to get going with the bodywork, straightening, welding and get it primered. might have to find a new home for her soon so need to get going.

also, andrew, has your mate still got that special 998 for sale? really need to get going with the engine too.
