Finally ground all the valves in
Got most of the head studs back in, put the rest in after I took this picture
While I was doing that dad took the oil filter apart
..Leaving me a pile of parts to clean

Well, the heads on! Rockers are all built up and the shaft is on, only a few little bits left for the engine then it can be painted and in. Hopefully should be done for my 17th - 30 days today
Anyway, I gave the head some final work before it went on, cleaned where the gaskets will sit and gave it a few washes in petrol to get rid of the grinding paste. It's a wonder I didn't die from all the fumes
Soaked in petrol
Various bits to wash, studs, cotters, springs all that stuff and the rocker shaft
So I washed the push rods first, whipped them and then cleaned them
Also cleaned a bit for the oil filter that I forgot
some studs
Then set to fitting in the valves, dad showed me how to do it then I done the rest, I done it by washing the valve in petrol to make sure there was no grinding paste on them then put a little bit of grease on it, poked it through then attached the o ring, springs, head and cotters etc
Then we built it up

Not much done lately, I've cleaned and painted a few more bits, dads working on site and there's not much I can do anyway, we'll be getting etch next week and getting the engine painted, It's May 31st today, and the etch situation has put a bit of a stick in the works on getting it done for my 17th which is in 16 days, but you can't have everything
I was also featured in July's issue of Mini Magazine! I'm really proud of this feature, even though I nagged Jon a bit too much :/, on the off chance you're reading this, thank you! I'm really proud
Anyway, the majority of this is just cleaning already cleaned bits that had gathered surface rust, I might have painted my hand though
With all those bit's cleaned it was time to red oxide them, at the moment I've got a cold, although I'm in the last stages now I still have no taste and a bunged up nose, opened the lid, couldn't smell anything, leaned over to paint breathed in and killed a few thousand brain cells
With all them Oxided I remembered I'd forgotten about some washers and castle nuts, so I gave them a once over and set to getting them painted along with the Oxided pieces. This is we're I messed up, as you can see all the bits are hanging up with some wire cable thing, anyway, instead of painting the washers and castle nuts with the brush I decided to cheat and just dunk them in the paint.. I was onto the last one when I took my eye off for 2 seconds to look at the radio, heard this plop sound and got too interested into looking at the cool bubble it had made in the paint to realise I'd actually dropped the washer in, I tried fishing it out with a hook but got fed up
Anyway, here's the washers cleaned and blacked along with the others

Ever since I took the picture I've been paranoid about that :S

Could you not of used a magnet to get the washer out or did you just want to put your hand in the paint

I tried with the hook it fell off but couldn't find it, then had the idea of a latex glove so I cut a bin bag off slightly and put my army in that and it sorta put paint all over the bench :/ Never thought about a magnet although I did just want to dive in, such a weird feeling :S

Done a small amount recently, dad's been working out on site and there's not much to be done over all really,
We have the etch ready to go, tomorrow we'll be clearing the shed out so we can get the engine out to paint, it went in through a small gap and now it's built up wont come out so it's gotta come through the door on the other side which is full of junk
Anyway, since I didn't really know what I was doing I just helped here, but dad built up the drive shafts
Took the drive flanges of an old diff to use but those are naff so the old ones that came of the engine have been welded
And finally, dad picked this up at Newark, it's not the same as the original, but I'm not complaining

Done alot this week, been to DSN, cleaned a space in the garage, cleaned a space in the shed to move the engine, moved it and then etched it
Get's a nice coat of green tomorrow, which is also my birthday And my first driving lesson
Anyway, I can't remember what we got from DSN but I know it was 2 gaskets, water pump. top and bottom hose, rubber thing that goes around the rad, some other pipe and some studs, there's probably more but I can't remember
Anyway, here's the water pump, I forgot to take a better picture too
Remember those castle nuts and washer I had to paint and dropped a washer in the paint? Well that was a waste of time as I cleaned them again because we decided we'd make a mess of them putting the drive flanges on
Then fitted this gasket
Also fitted the gear linkage nuts
Also did the drive flanges
Then cleaned the spark plugs, but don't worry these aren't going in they're just to fill the space so paint don't go in the threads
Then borrowed a lifting eye of someone, cleaned that up
Then took the engine outside and put it on the crane to etch, looks really plastic now

It's my birthday!
Had my first driving lesson today, went well and I have a two hour lesson this Thursday, theory on Wednesday.. One step closer
On another note, done quite a bit to day and I'm really impressed with the results
Started off by rubbing down the engine, you can't really see it though
Also done the manifold
Cleaned the dipstick and dynamo bracket, did debate having these green but we've done some other bits black and I think black would stand out a bit more
Didn't have time to take a clean picture but we etched those up, and the water pump pulley
And now the best bit..

Coming along nicely though matey, dont expect that paint to last on the exhaust mabifold though haha. You definately seem to like the colour green![]()
I was gonna say that but thought better of it ;)
It'll be alright and the original colour is green so it had to be green, and once the dynamo and starter had been painted I couldn't change my mind

Aha brilliant!
True, but not EVERYTHING was green You could of tried the same thing you did with your hand.. dipped the whole engine in the paint. or better still, finish assembling the car and dip the whole lot... Brilliant
EDIT: Might want to mask off the windows first though
