I kinda get the feeling that perhaps you didn't even need filler on the whole panel?

Well, theres a reason to that.
Please please please, no one jump on me and kick me in the head or anything..........but......I kinda stuck a flap disk on the grinder and took a lot of the paint on the panel off with that .
I guess that sums up my knowledge of Body finishing aye! I've not the foggiest!.
If it was my own crappy daily that I knew id definatly keep and abuse daily on the winter roads i'd not use an ounce of filler on it before paint, but this being a Checkmate and restoration to standard spec I feel id better try and make a ruddy good job of it.

Why would you not use metal spreaders Ben ? I got mine from a bodyshop
Cheers James
I find that the metal spreaders are more difficult to control, The silly plastic grip gets in the way. I like to hold the spreader in a way where it kinda becomes part of my hand (if that makes sense?)
I also find that the sharp solid edges of the metal spreader easily create drags and lines in the filler and if you are trying to work quickly you can end up keep mucking it up.
If you have't tried a plastic spreader before then give it a go, they are much easier to work with. I have been round to help another forum member with his filler work and he had been using the metal spreaders and struggled. He now prefers the plastic ones.
When i'm working with filler, i like to get it right first time so whatever makes it easier, i will go for and also recommend to others.
I guess it;'s personal preference though really

If the filler is not needed, then get it off.
The only damage you have done with the flap disc is gouged the paint. You can rectify that with your DA. Even, SLOW side to side actions will soon ahve that paint off and the metal nice and smooth.
You will only need filler in the bottom 10-12" of the panel then i guess looking at it.

I did smooth the welds off J yeah, with the same flap disc on the grinder, the welds on the seam (plugs) aren't that smooth though but I guess it doesn't matter because of the seam strip.

Hello Internet , a while it has been since I have posted in here.
I've been working hard to pay for a few things recently and left with little to no time after hours, so I booked a few days off and I've cleaned up and started back working on the mini.
Seems I've got a lot of cleaning up to do in the Checkmate if nothing else, as you can see I've Zinc primed most of the side I had been sanding down and now I shall be moving onto the front floor pan (big cut out hole to fill!), then on from there I may finish welding the lower half on the outer sill on and sticking some more protection in the cavity.
I must say it's nice to be back working on the minis/Metro , and I'll be trying my best to make an hour everyday after work to work on them.
Cheers,
Cliff

Hi cliff been a long time since I spoke to u. How you doing? Nice to see your back on the mini and it's looking good . Thanks Tom
Indeed it has Tom, still, there's nothing much that's changed though! .
I'm not doing too bad thanks, been busy with work and all.....so that's my excuse of absence .

Hi Ben, Hmmm I think I'll stick around for now you know , hopefully can get motoring over the Christmas period a bit as well whilst everyone eats a slap up meal and what not.
I don't think I did much more sanding on the rear quarter than what was done a while back to be honest, amazing how nice it looks in one colour!
I'm not too bothered about the finish yet though, as long as it's protected that's all that matters. The paint job can be re-done at a later stage on final assembly or something if it's that bad.
Nice work Cliff looking good
Thanks Lad! , welcome to the Mini Forum
Cheers,
Cliff

This is looking sweet! Ace work as per usual. You rattle canning it? And did you zinc primer over the filler?
I need to replace the drivers rear quarter on mine. Looks like I'm keeping my bare shell too so will be getting the shell minted and buy a donor to just transfer all the parts onto over a weekend! Fingers crossed. Do you have a flip front for the other mini?

Ahh could have sworn you had gotten rid of the Shell Nath.
I did rattle can the Zinc primer on yes, but the finish paint will be through the spray gun, hopefully in the garage in summer or something.

Long story about that. Will message you on Facebook next time you're online, which is probably now haha. And you not considering rattle canning the topcoat now? As the zinc primer will be porous?
