Nice work, shame you had the extra effort to clean up those cant rails!
I shall be stripping the paint back on mine before too long, hopefully won't have to do the same, I'm sorely tempted to remove a corner to see what is lurking though!

Hi alchall
If its original then i think you'll find there's very little paint behind it, like mine.

Indeed, and mine being a later model it could be worse!

Some awesome work there as ever :)

Great work. Look forward to seeing this one progress. I quite fancy getting a Clubman next but I best make a start on the Cooper first

As I had already taken off the front and rear cant rails and found rust, the side ones had to come off as well.
Sure enough there was rust behind them - not suprisingly as there was no paint.
After a quick tickle with a wire brush - much better. By no means finished but i've got the most off.
Insides of the rails de-rusted and etch primed.
There was a bit of damage to the ends that go on the A-pillars so I made a couple of bits with the same profile to repair them. Not bad made by hand.
And found yet another hole in the drivers door frame so cut that out as well.
Plodding along slowly.

Blimey that's more rust than I expected you to uncover, especially up the inside of the roof!

that is very intersting to find it in there!! i will be looking for it now on my resto when I get to that bit!
Nice Progress though!!

Hi Psycho-biker.
I think you'll find rust there on most unrestored ones as there is no paint behind there. But mine wasn't bad for a 36 year old one.

Bit of a long update over the Easter holidays but bare with me.
Repaired some some of the rusty gutter rail, cutting out the crap, bending metal to the profile then welding back in.
Replaced the rust I previously cut out from the opening of the drivers door.
De-rusted the original front an rear body seams and coated them with epoxy primer.
Also gave a coat of epoxy primer to the roof area behind the cant rails.
Repairs to the both the front of both the side cant rails.
After priming the cant rails with several coats of primer they had a few coats of black paint.
Repairs to the tops if the A-Pillars.
Cant rails welded back on and a couple of coats of primer to finish.
A couple more of the jobs off my list.

Great effort - that lot would have taken me months!

Nice tidy work there, dont see many people doing that part of the roof. At least you have that peice of mind that its rust free between there now.

Just a couple of jobs this w/e.
Welded in the handbrake mounts.
And made a couple of reinforcing plates for the front subby rear mounts from 3mm steel as the old girl will once again have solid mounts on the front.
With a coat of primer.
Like I said not a lot this w/e but another two jobs ticked off my list.
