I'd probably start with a compression test. Best done when at running temp, but even done cold may shed some light.

Ye I will try and get hold of a compression tester from work tomorrow and see what that turns out to be.

its sounding so bad under load. Its fine in neutral through the rev range.

Headgasket then.

Could be the coil(I doubt it as the op adjusted the timing..)

Had a new coil few weeks back.

We bought a new coil for our 998 and it was faulty

My thinking is its the overheating that has caused the issue as the engine was running fine before

So I ended up just removing the head as I finished work early. Ive attached some pictures. Theres some marks in between cylinder 2 + 3. But hasn't completely broken through the gasket?

Did you do a compression test first? That would show if two and three had become one!

Lay a metal straight edge on the head face and check it hasn't warped from the overheating. Also check the block face is flat.

Would've been waiting a week for postage of a compression tester and I was itching to see if it was the head gasket so I pulled it off. Yep will do. Now the carb is off i will give that a good clean as well and check for damage.
