Hi all,

Trying to get my Austin Mayfair stated after 6 years. It had a blown head gasket. I have replaced this and had a few niggly issues with an electronic distributor so reverted to new points. I have got the car running however it is spluttering fuel out the air intake of the Hs4.

I have managed to get the distributor to 4 degrees as it was very advanced but the problem is persistent.

There is also exhaust gas by the looks of it coming from the intake.

I did the tappet adjustments following a tutorial and I know I have to get the car to temp and then re-torque but I don't want to run it too long with this issue.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I will try to answer any questions to diagnose this.

Thanks a ton.

Are the HT leads on the correct plugs? No1 cylinder is the timing chain end and the dizzy spins anti-clockwise, it's easy to get them in the wrong order.

Yeah, just double checked. Got them going 1, 3, 4, 2. Anti clockwise

Thinking about what I have just posted, could this be a result of a poor tappet adjustment job?
I may go through it again and see what it is like?

It's typically from a lean mixture.

Had a look at the tappets and exhaust on cylinder 1 was way out of spec. Don't think I tightened it and it's worked itself loose. I have just eyeballed it for now, done a quick 30 second start and didn't see any fuel or exhaust smoke.
I will set the fuel mixture and go through all of the clearances and hopefully this works.

Can you post some pictures of the engine bay, especially some showing the carb, distributor and plug leads.

The tolerances was the issue. It's running fairly smooth now. Exhaust on cylinder 1 was very loose. I don't think I tightened it fully when making the adjustments and it must have worked it's way loose.
Now onto the next issue. The clutch seems seized. Hopefully just the slave.

I will be moving house in the coming months so my aim is to drive the car to the new property. Nothing like a deadline to give you motivation.

Once I have moved, I'll be looking to do a more thorough restoration

Yeah I think that is the issue. I disconnected the slave and that moves freely. I've put a bit of WD on the plunger and not much. Added a bit of 3 in 1 and managed to get a little movement so hopefully that will be enough for it to penetrate.

Would you suggest a few light taps or get a bar in there and work it back and forth?

Hi,

PlusGas is much better than WD40 as it is a proper penatrating fluid. I beleive WD40 is not classified as a penatrating fluid but more a water repellant.

Check the flexible hose from master cylinder to slave cylinder. I had a stuck clutch recently and after fitting a new slave and master cylinder, I changed the hose and it was that which cured the problem.

Thank you, I need to order some proper penetrating fluid (something that should be in the garage anyway) so hopefully that will work.

I kept the slave on the hose but removed the pin to the clutch linkage and it moved freely so I do think it's the plunger.

This is currently how it is seized.

No amount of swearing is helping..

Hi,

Looking at your picture there should be a 6mm gap between the wok and the righthand of the two nuts below the clutch lever.

I do not know if not having that gap will mean the arm will not move but I am sure someone else will be able to clarify that.

Paddy
