Yes, that's quite excessive, and you have to consider that between the wheel and the actual diff there's also a pot joint and CV and 4 splined connections which all introduce a little bit of play... so as I said, the movement you have is not brilliant, but I've seen worse.

OK. Thanks for all your efforts John.

I will get her sorted a.s.a.p. I don't think it's worth risking it getting any worse.

He's not sure it's the diff.
He's not sure it's the 'box.
The play he reckons is normal.
The handling is fine with no bad vibes.
He's not sure it's not bearings again.

He is sure that it's not worth stripping her down until the noise gets worse.
If it's the 'box or diff, the problem will reveal itself pretty damn soon, and then she has to be stripped anyway.
If it's something else, well I've saved a shed loads of cash and a few days of being car-less.

ju ju word of advice if the box is suspect then get it changed before the bang because it can take the engine with it, if it throws crap around.
the offer still stands

Cheers Dave!
I will get some warning before the BANG, so as soon as she starts to whinge a bit more, she'll be looking for a skilled surgeon.

my mini used to eat bearings, well not totaly demolish them but the only ran smooth for a little while then i used to get wheel wobble. mine turned out to be a combination of hub, flange and cv joint (the flange was wearing the hub which seizing the bearings with the swarf and so the inner collar thingy was wearing the cv joint away).
Well, she's had a new hub & driveshaft. I can't remember what else there is to change, now!

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but the same is is happening to Matilda again. Her eighth (or ninth I can't remember which) have now been replaced.
But she's still making that weird singing noise of "Whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo"". It raises in pitch with speed & is independent of transmission.
She's running really quiet now, but there are three sugnificant sounds I can make out:
1. Air filter
2. Tyre roar
3. "Whoooooooooooooooo", which turns into "whum whum whum" on high speed roundabouts
Do I have a strange form of tinnitus?
Do I have the ears of a hypochondriac?
Do I need therapy?
Is it "normal mini noise"?
Is she calling for a mate?
Or is there something else wrong that we've been missing all along?

Help us please?
have a look for some MOWOG bones sounds like you have the ghost of one with some unfinnished buisiness possibly the same thing causing your mystery bearing problems

500 miles of wiggly lane negotiation & gear-change-hills later & still no change in the noise or vibration & handling.
This coming weekend we're going to do about 500 miles in 24 hours & a lot of m'way driving, so we'll see how it goes.
I have a lovely fresh AA membership card with the ink of my siggy still drying on the back.

Grindy-grindy-ping-ping-crunch when turning right, and a little rumble when in a straight line.

I will take heed of your experience, AzMaN. Thank you.
