Any vibration from mangled shafts that's big enough to munch wheel bearings would likely be picked up by an on car wheel balancer. If the previous bearings were as cream crackered as you describe then it's likely the races span in the hub or on the flange. Assembling the bearings without the spacers will let you tinker with the preload and hopefully spot any un even rotation as a result of things being out of true. Just don't run 'em with out the spacers fitted :P

Don't you also have a complete donor Mini in cardboard boxes to borrow bits off? It'd be cheaper than dinting the piggy bank for new bits when you ain't defo isolated the cause yet.

He's not a donor mini Ethel >_< . He's not dead yet. :dontgetit:

If I can determine whether it is deffo the diff, then there's no point in me touching the driveshafts at the moment. The bearings are now fine & smooth....but for how long, I might ask..... :dontgetit:

Hi..Juju and this may sound daft but what size wheels are you 6" or 7" as 7s may be causing a strain on your bearings and as you've replaced these twice so far what quality bearings were you using it might be worth you going to an engineers and get a better quality bearing I've had problems with minisports before when fitting for friends and went to an engineers for better ones...............so give this a thought............... >_<

She's on 12"x5" (if you care to read the thread >_< )

Mr Guessworks: The results of your lil test are as follows:

I followed one of the marks on the tyre wall through 1 and a quarter inches of play. Without drawing a complete clock-face or compass on my tyre in the works carpark, I think that roughly translates as between 7 and 10 degrees of movement.

Bad news? :dontgetit:

When the munched bearings are taken out, are both sides munched? If something is munching the bearings then possibly it could be the wheels (haven't got big spacers have you?), maybe the brakes in some way? >_< Or quite possibly mechanic error. It would be odd that you have two defective hubs that are munching bearings.

Well the set of bearings last year, only the inner part was munched (same side: O/S). I don't know about the last set. I'll have to ask...I've not ruled out mechanic error, but they've not had the same problem with another car....

Went a little further and took a video of a differential...

Firstly apologies for the dodgy camera work, using phone and only one hand...

The first video is of the inside of the differential, you will see the pinion gear or planet gear moving up and down

http://www.guess-wor...11032009014.mp4

the second shows the equivalent deflection of the output shaft as if you were turning the driveshaft, the mole grip is a 9" grip so the end of it is not dissimilar to the radius of a 13" wheel and tyre... When the grip is down, that's it's full extent of movement before the diff turns so the movement you see there is the total 'slack' in the diff.

http://www.guess-wor...11032009015.mp4

For reference... The diff pin in that is fubar...

I'll be build a new diff tonight with new pin and planets etc... I'll so the same video's for that when it's done to show the DIFFerance >_<

OK. I managed to play the vid. That's quite a bit more play that I have. Maybe twice as much if I have my relative proportions correct?
