Finally started the engine build today. Got the bottom end built up by the end of the day, I spent a few more hours to start with, cleaning everything making sure its the best I could get it, cleaned it all out with an airline to finish before I started putting the crank in then the rods/pistons etc.

Also re-measured my deck height, its about 1/2 to 1 thou , I think decked is the appropiate word :D, and that was a light skim. I dont mind that though as long as its not a plus figure which is isn't.

Tomorrow I'll put the followers and cam in, front plate and then I might drop it onto the box.

Checking the deck height, a bit rough and ready but it gives me accurate results :(.

I should be alright I think Nick, if I get stuck I'll give you a bell, but I dont think I will get any problems with these vernier gears, just got to countersink the bottom screws on the front plate first, did I read somewhere that you have to file down the heads of the cam retainer bolts?

Thinking of timing the cam using the averages way. Take reading 10 thou before and after then average them to get my full lift.

That lubes thick ay it, like treacle.

no need to do the heads on the cam retainer, they don't catch.

told you that lube was good stuff!

line the sprockets up dot to dot first that will save some time, then start taking the readings. dont forget to use the inlet push rod, 2nd one in :D

Also must remember to turn the engine anti-clockwise from fly end :D.

Cams in, a bit on the siff side to turn but turns nicely ( think its due to the lube, its quite thick), front plates on. Was going to drop the gearbox on today but the idler gear endfloats a bit too much (12 thou) so off to minispares tomorrow to pick up some shims.

Managed to drop the gearbox onto the engine yesterday after swapping some idler shims with bud666 (cheers mate :)) and today ive done the cam timing! Set it up dot to dot and the first measurement came to 102 degrees which I thought wasn't too bad for a rough setting, kent cams (as you probably know) are timed in at 106 but its best to time in at 104 due to chain stetch. Which meant that 104 was my target, and its bang on the money at 104 degrees (measured twice to make sure), was a lot of adjusting to get there, went from 102 to 105.5 then 105 then strangely 105.75 until finally reaching 104.

So thats the hard part done, also managed to lap my flywheel in today and its lapped in nicely.

Some pictures.

Back on the gearbox (engine colour looks faded in this pick :P )

One lapped crank.

Mmmmm some MED ultralight goodness.

Timing gears, after just fitting them before the fine adjustment.

Done a bit more the last few days, been spending a few days running around after stuff.

Transfer case is on, flywheels on, and the timing cover and crank pulley are on. Next time I build an engine I will make sure I have everything I need before I start .

Finally managed to send my head off to SRE yesterday, so should be there Monday/Tuesday, thats the only thing I need to finish it now. Done a bit of sandblasting today with our paint gun lookalike shot blast gun. It gets everywhere . Need a cabinet for it. Done the oil filter head and has come up really nice.

Might in the next week or so, pull the 998 out the blue'n and prep the bay ready for the new lump, as the heads going to take roughly 3 weeks so gives me plenty of time.

Some pictures.

Small update.

Got a few bits from Bingley at the weekend (oil filter head to block pipe (braided), one peice braided clutch pipe and a pre-verto slave). Much cheaper at the show.

My heads arrived at slarks so I should be hearing off them soon (depending how busy thet are).

Dropped my metro dizzy in H&H ignition solutions today to be re-curved, all for...... wait for it....... £25 BARGAIN!! They will alter the curve to suit my engine, I gave them the full spec so they know exactly what engine its going into.

Update.

Engines been sitting in the garage for a few weeks now whilst I waited for the head to be done by SRE (top blokes), had an email yesterday to say its done! Sweet! So Im going to pay up on monday and they will send it up by courier, so should have it at some point next week and then I can plonk it on the engine the weekend.

So plans are....... prep engine bay (paint master cylinders, tidy baulkhead) fit fuel pump, fit engine, wire, plumb, bolt engine in, fire engine up.

Easy.........

Brought some more bits aswell, fuel pump, reg, head bolts, stat housing and studs, rocker studs etc) Ordered all that and thought, balls..... head gasket! :D. Got one from oldbury minispares today. Will start tidying the engine bay tomorrow and also looking at, and possibly mounting my fuel pump and reg.
