The real villans in all this are the government who have labeled all roadworthy cars over 10 years old with an MOT as suitable for scrap regardless of condition, mileage or classic status............this is also now happening throughout Europe, in Germany where the scheme pays 5000 Euros large numbers of solid rust free Mk2 Golf GTi's have gone to scrap, recently on a Mini forum an Italian classic Mini owner was scrapping his Mini for a new MINI because the money offered under their governments scrappage scheme was far more than his tidy Rover Cooper was worth on the open market and he needed a new car for personal reasons.

The following comes from the latest issue of Classic Car Weekly and provides more examples of what is happening. Sadly this government and the rest of Europe leaders care little about classic cars or motoring heritage and we are considered an insignificant minority of motorists:-

SCRAPPAGE HITS CLASSICS!
More than 20 roadworthy classics destroyed in first week!

The government's controversial scrappage scheme came into effect last week. Sadly, the scheme has already led to the demise of at least 22 roadworthy classics that we know of - and there are bound to be more, writes Peter Simpson.

It's important to note too that these cars cannot have been total basket cases or even restoration projects. To qualify for the scrappage scheme a car has to have an MoT and to have belonged to its current keeper for at least a year.

To date the oldest - and rarest-confirmed scrappage victim is a 1966 Austin 1100-the Mk1 version of which there are thought to be less than 20 left in roadworthy condition. Next oldest was a '1968 Morris Minor. Both these were traded in against new Hyundais. We understand that Hyundai dealers have also taken in an MGB, MG Midget, Jaguar XJS and XJ6 and Fiat X1/19-all clearly classic and in the case of the Fiat a rare one - along with an Austin (not Rover) Metro, Nissan 300ZX, and no fewer than six Mazda MX-5s and seven MGFs.

Elsewhere the Dealer Principal of a London Citroen franchise told Classic Car Weeky that his company had already scrapped a one owner from new Citroen XM Estate in "near mint" condition. The dealership did not want to do this-the principal is a 'very avid' classic Citroen enthusiast who has restored several cars himself; however the simple truth was that he is running a business and the £2000 combined government and manufacturer grants exceeded the car's market value. The scrappage money was also available instantly whereas finding a buyer would have taken time.

However he also pointed out that scrappage is by no means always the most cost-effective route to buying a new car; often a deal involving other discounts and/or a pre-registered delivery mileage car is better.

In fact many dealers are sympathetic to the cause of saving classics but finding themselves with no option but to scrap. Roadworthy, a highly reputable family-run Suzuki dealership in Bristol had an enquiry on a new Alto from someone wanting to 'scrappage' a genuine 40,000mile 1974 Vauxhall Magnum.
The Magnum was the wife's car and with advancing years she was finding it less suitable for her needs. The dealer attempted to save the car by listing it on eBay - however to match the scrappage offer the car had to sell for more than its market value, so at the time of writing it remains unsold though we understand the dealership is trying to broker a deal that will see the car saved. Sales Executive Andy Tait said that the Magnum is "far too nice and unusual to crush "though in his position he needs to be realistic, adding: "Beyond trying to sell this car there's nothing more we can do. If we don't accept the car as part of the scheme then another dealership will."

This was quote also found recently by "minirog" as posted by a Car Dealer and MINI/Mini fan on another forum:-
"We have an MG Midget and 2 classic Mini's coming in............... breaks my heart to be honest."

no, but he said "good old taffy, that bloke is a legend" and in the linked topic Taffy is still calling BMW MINI owners Nazis, therefore the mistro, and Juju are agreeeing with the nazi comment.

and to think, not long ago Juju claimed that I was harassing people by calling them pillocks :-

the whole thing stinks of hypocrisy and ignorance, and no, I'm not a MINI fan but i know where to draw the line :D

I've got a George Michael CD, does that mean I should steer clear of public lavatories?

Taffy isn't on the forum to defend himself and even if his many BMW related posts might appear show a pathological hatred of Teutonic car manufacturers, "Nazi" could be intended to mean anything from authoritarian or undemocratic
to genocidal mass murderer.

Now can we get back to opposing the euthanasia of innocent little Minis, especially by one particularly graceless dealership of the would be spiritual successor to this victim of the despicable scheme.

Thank you for defending me against the rather confused extrapolations of THE ANORAK, Ethel. :P Just because I said:

Good old Taffy! ^_^ He just can't help himself!

...doesn't mean I agree with his opinions! I just have to admire someone who sticks to their guns in such a bl**dy minded manner regardless of their beliefs. I mean, I loved my late Grandfather, but he was a racist bigot! :D

Anyway, back on topic. I agree with mabo1uk. This legislation is mindless & is merely an attempt to jumpstart the motor manufacturing industry once more. It makes no long term economic or ecological sense. :-

Do any of you remember what porsche did with VW/Audi, and basicly buying them out by taking up all the shares?

Im no expert on shares and stuff but i have an idea:

IF there were enough of us, we could do the same to BMW, come together as one group, then sell everything back to them, but keeping everything mini branded, and anything related to it, to stop them makeing them anymore. Then we could pretty much do what we liked with it, even start makeing the real mini's again (probably, would they pass modern saftey regs?)

never gunna happen, but its a plan! we could ruin them. MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA :-

:D

Chris

PS: call me an idiot if you like.

... and sell off the BMW brand identity to a disability scooter manufacturer?

I still think there's nothing to stop anyone doing what W&P have done with the Margrave 50 regardless of what BMW say.

No, take back everything they took from rover, and everything they developed from rover designs.
Keep there engine technoligy, and all there special branding, like the M series stuff and there Eco brand name (e bade i thin?), and stop alpina working with them, with some special contract.

then sell everything else back to the origional owners, and watch them go bust in a big public scandle.

sell the engine technoligy, and special brand badges to Honda, allong with the alpina contract, would be a right laugh, imagion a honda accord with 400bhp+ and rear wheel drive :D

Quite right, I'll complain directly to them and to MINI UK, who should have the sense in the year of the 50th to see the gross error this dealership have made.

As an owner of new and classic I'm outraged by this but unsurprised at the stupidity - I certainly wouldn't go near a dealership that does this! :D

YES, the stickers say - Turn this (the Mini) into this (£2000) - ie. scrap the classic for a new one. Where's Anorak and Taffy to have a rant when you need them?

Clearly they're jealous of the charm the classic mini beholds, and must be desperate to sell the new mini if they're pulling off "advertising" stints like this.

Taffy isn't on the forum to defend himself ...

thats right, he's still sulking because he got a 24 hour ban for posting a photo of a Nazi parade and comparing it to the London to Brighton run >_< >_<

Ok, i apologise to Juju and the mistro but i do NOT apologise for thinking taffy has gone too far with his comments. legend is not the word i would use to describe him lately >_<

all this moaning about BMW's activitoes is absolutly pointless, they are not going to stop selling the MINI because most classic mini fans dislike it. the best way to deal with them is to ignore them.
