As above really. There are seemingly large chunk of debris on the plug magnet, all really tiny metal parts, only looks like 'hedgehog'!Attached File  IMAG0139.jpg   20.05K   73 downloads

Is this a reason for worries?

Mine looked like that last time the oil was changed. I'd only just brought her, so I have no idea how long the oil had been in there, so it's not a really a useful comparison. That said, she runs just fine and magnetic drain plug is certainly doing its job.

Being that the gearbox shares the oil with the engine, I imagine there is more chance of swarf being generated.

I would do an oil change / filter change (as you probably have done due to sump plug out)

I always put some magnets on the outside of the oil filter to trap any fine metal in the oil

as above most mini's have a bit on the magnet - I would say that is pretty normal

it means it's doing its job , most of that came from the gearbox I should imagine

as long as there are no larger bit's - esp non magnetic in the bottom of the oil

ie white metal from the bearings

thanks for your replies.

Si I assume it is normal picture. There was no more debris in the oil.

Yes, that looks quite normal.
As mentioned the engine and gearbox share the same oil. Every time a gear change is missed or the clutch doesn't fully disengage fully before changing gear this can generate metallic particles that will stick to the drain plug.

Cheers, Steve.

Again it all depends how often you change the oil (this is one of the reasons you should do it regularly) and if you have had any work done like a new box or head skim say id expect a little more than usual but id say thats fairly normal iff it hasn't been done in a while.  As sledge said above look for larger chips wear is normal chips are signs the teeth are breaking up.

keep the photo in your mini folder, change the oil, and when you change it again (next year i hope) compare them, the more regular the flushes the less you should see.

How many miles are you doing??? If your doing a far few I would change the oil and filter, even if your not doing that many miles for the sake of a few quid on the oil and filter, plus a bit of your time, you could change the oil and filter in a few months..... Just for your own piece of mind.
