Thanks everyone for all of the advice, really appreciated and lots to consider Going to be a whole before I am able to rebuild this but will post the results and which route we took when able to!

Have you shown photos of the block to the machine shop for their advice?

I had a similar issue and after cleaning up the block with some fine wet and dry sand paper (as suggested earlier in this thread), I used a Viktor Reinz composite gasket with some loctite 3020 applied as suggested by Calver ST (this advice is for small bores).

I've done a few thousand miles since then in the mini and it's been fine.

My skills are definitely bodger inclined,the block face is sub optimal.Cry quietly as you dismantle the motor and have it refaced.This is my opinion based on a similar experience long ago with my 1800 MGB.Over 100K later I have now just recovered from the trauma of such a cheap job costing so much time.This is just my view,Steve..
