My "new" 1981 Clubman 1275GT has just got home but its got a few issues.  The front left caliper sticks but I'm ordering the parts to rebuild it, and there's a loud squeal for about 30 seconds to a minute upon startup.  It doesn't always happen but it's fairly consistent.  It sounds like it's the alternator bearings, which I'm not sure is serviceable.  Can just the bearing be replaced, or should I buy a new alternator and probably upgrade while I'm at it?  Thanks!

Loud squeal just after starting is usually associated with a loose fanbelt. Depends on which alternator is fitted as to how easy the bearing are replaced. It is usual to fit a rebuild kit if you are going tothe effort of opening the unit, as it makes more sense to do this at the same time considering the effort involved.

Change and re-tension the fanbelt before you possibly waste time and money on anything else. You can get one quickly in Halfords or any parts and accessories shop.
