Thought I would give an update.
New distributor arrived from Aldon. It is basically an Aldon yellow with no weights or vacuum advance, as the amethyst unit takes care of that.
The quality is so much higher than the powerspark I had fitted. The Aldon has zero play in the spindle and also the electronic module is far better quality.
The engine runs much smoother so very happy. Go to the full post

What's it like at 1000rpm and 1200rpm?

I think the SW8 could be quite lumpy at a low tick over.

If you have poly engine mounts that will explain a lot. Polyurethane is useful stuff in the right places, which are many, but not engine mounts, ever. It is greatly hyped and knowingly mis-sold by the spivs and wasters who increasingly inhabit the Mini aftermarket where they are finding that they can make a fast buck, for a while.

I have ordered some rubber ones so will swap them out and see how I get on.

Have also ordered a new Aldon dizzy with ignitor. Has no vacuum and no advance weights
This is to work with the amethyst unit. The Powerspark dizzy I have seems bad quality.

Thanks for your input
Dan

Thanks to everyone for their input
Have a few things to try and will report back how I get on

I'm thinking its the engine steadies as there is zero movement when trying to rock or rev engine
Thanks

Could be. There should be visible movement, a few mm at least, but not more than about 10mm max.

My friend Rowan has all the engine steadies money can buy, the 2 lower ones as well as the 2 top mounted, standard engine mounts, everything is very tight and his motor is sooooooo quiet.
Just purrs.

Could be just those engine mounts.

Engine mounts are rubber so thats not the problem.

Have rubber steady bushes coming.

Today I loosened off the steadys and it made no difference

Going to sneak it onto the road tommorow to see whats its like under load.

I can't really hear anything that would make me worry. Sounds quite normal for a 1275 with a lumpy cam, maybe a bit of a leak on the exhaust Y joint?

That explains it then. Side play in the distributor shaft is very common as they age, or from new if they are made by Ducellier, and is a real killer of performance as it causes massive timing jitter.

Good to hear that all is now well. Have lots of fun!
