Right now im on a pc, ill update this with pics.

Started off by stripping and cleaning all the gearbox, man its hard work without any sort of pressure washer etc but I got there in the end.

Removed diff casing and then the diff, stripped the diff and rebuilt using new hardened pin, new bevel gears, new fibre washers, new thrusts. Fitted 3.1 Crown Wheel and finished that. Next it was to strip and check the speedo drive, stripped that and checked, used guessworks site to work out if it needed changing. it does need changing, but its not that far out, so for cost its staying. speedo will over read by 1 or 2mph according to guessworks site, which is better than under reading.

Changed the pinion, but had to also change the 4 bolt (c shaped thing) behind it as it was too close a fit with the new pinion. Sourced a bigger one and its all fitted and done.

Rebuilt the gearbox, fitted diff, fitted casing, fitted new seals (linkage n shafts) and gave it a coat of black paint.

Went back to engine and did some work on that, fitted oil pump and such. Checked cam and refitted with some engine lube for next start up (just for good measure).

Fitted block to gearbox and painted the clutch transfer gear housing.

So crack on tomorrow with building it back up and painting the engine.

Speedy Gonzales!
We had to machine the C-shaped thing to take the 2.9 pinion like your 3.1.
Keep going.

Well after a day disassembling, cleaning, reassmebling, checking and double checking its back together. Everything taken apart to be cleaned and/or greased etc.

Fitted new release bearing, bk450 headgasket, manifold studs and nuts, changed rockers from early to later type as one of the adjusters on the early set had snapped so adjusting tappets was a nightmare. New bypass hose and afew other bits for good measure.

Carb and inlet were taken apart, surfaces cleaned for new gaskets to be fitted etc.

Painted block and head green, rest black. not sure on the green and the previous paint on the block is like enamel and wont come off easily, so bright green over black didnt work very well at first lol.

Anyway, hopefully get abit of wiring sorted tomorrow, engine bay cleaned up and engine back in. Need to seperate the LCB from Y piece as it was well stuck before when removing engine. with engine out hopefully ill be able to get it apart and clean it up for refitting the engine.

Looks good, what's the process for changing the pinion gear? and would it be possible with the gearbox still on the engine?

Looking to change mine to a 3.1 as well, but I've got the C thing that came with a standard 3.1 gearbox.

remove diff n turn linkage free. lock in two gears and undo the nut.

fairly straight forward. see guessworks video on youtube.

engine back in and running. needs half of a day to tinker and set timing fueling etc. exhaust on but blowing so need extra pair of hands to help me fit that.

no oil leaks so far. looks like the extra time and care spent with each gasket as worked. fingers crossed. slight water leak from heater hose joiner which ill fix with new jubilees.

cheap oil n filter on for now. need to run upto temp retorque head then drop the oil. double check tappets and fill with good oil ready to use.

wiring sorted..new aux fusebox fitted. loom retaped using high quality loom cloth similar to modern cars.
(sorry for blurry pic, its a 6 way fuse box, which takes 1 feed in and then feeds each fuse. ideal for me due to the number of items i have wired in to IGN ON position....also got bulb warnings when a fuse is blown)

i used to lock the crownwheel and pinion with a two pence piece between the teeth allowing you to loosen or tighten the pinion nut

Yeah i suppose that would work, but if it slips and your putting your body weight/effort on a breaker bar, its gunna end badly.

Pics added to previous post. Need to wire up the perm live feed for radio with inline fuse, note the black wire not wired up above. I need to redo the grill spotlight wiring as it wasnt very good and was asking for trouble.

Want to replace the hose joiner in the bottom hose to heater hose and new jubilees.

Needs exhaust fitting better, run upto temp, retorque head, change oil and filter, do balljoint, set tappets and then road test :D

Wow, you just get on with it. Afraid I can't pick up a spanner without a 10-minute discussion on the old days, bolt sizes, young people today etc. Good job there isn't a gate in the garage or I'd be leaning on it all day chewing a straw.
Carry on, don't mind me.

I find it better not to leave things for too long or you loose bits/forget to do stuff.

So i wanted the engine back in the car and together asap, which ive now done, so it can wait a while now for the next jobs. Probally next weekend now.

You love a winter engine rebuild dont you :D Everytime i see you building an engine there is snow on the ground lol.

Apologies for not making the meeting when you text. Been really busy lately, away with work and my dad had a heart attack which shocked us all! Definately have to catch up some time soon.

The car is looking really nice, maybes even my favourite of the ones you have had.

Just got a project myself to keep me busy in the garage, went and bought a motorbike!

Hope all the family is well :)
