I know AC knows his stuff, but that's contrary to the Rover manual that specifies 0.71 to 0.81 ohms for the primary winding.

1.5ohms would drop the voltage reaching the ignition module, but also increase the difference in potential with +ve supply. Way out of my depth, but transistors are operated by gate, or base, voltage changing, relative to what's across the source/emitter  & collector/drain aren't they?

Obviously they must cope with what cranking the starter, alternator etc does to the voltage.

Yes rover list 0.78ohms. The point is if you run this on the coils and modules now you will have problems
. I have been fitting the 1.5 ohm coils for years and the system and coils are more reliable.

The quality of the parts nowadays is very poor compared to much more expensive original equipment

Got it (I think).

So a new GCL143 is likely to have even less resistance at some point?

Ethel, a new GCL 143 has 0.9ohm. Don’t use it.

Use a coil with 1.5ohms of primary resistance and no ballast resistor, with the 65d dizzy.

For people looking for a 1,5 Ohm coil;
If you can find Bosch 0221102082 you’re golden.
Might be under F000ZS0027 depending on where you live.
Beru ZS563 might work too, these I measure at 1.7 ohms supposed to be a direct replacement for the Bosch but they measure a tad higher in resistance. If your local shop has stock, measure first.

You can say that one again AC, quality is very poor on lots of components

After reading this thread I got myself a 1.5ohm coil.Instant improvement, pulling better from low revs but a tiny bit more reluctant to start which I'm happy to live with.
